As the Russia-Ukraine conflict rages on, Professor Tommy Koh, Emeritus Professor at the NUS Faculty of Law, opines that it should not be framed as a conflict between democracy and autocracy, nor a proxy war between Russia and the West; instead, it should be viewed as a clear violation of international law: an unprovoked war of aggression by a country seeking to acquire the territories of its neighbour by force. To avoid further compromising Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, Professor Koh stresses that Ukrainian territory must not be ceded to Russia in return for the latter promising peace.
