Singapore has closed an important employment policy gap by mandating that platform companies must provide their workers with greater employment protection, including CPF payments and medical insurance. However, Professor Sumit Agarwal, Low Tuck Kwong Distinguished Professor of Finance, Economics, and Real Estate at NUS Business School and Managing Director of the NUS Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN), argues that more can be done to tackle the economic and social precarity faced by platform workers, including demanding greater transparency from platform companies when they announce price hikes to ensure that platform workers’ wages remain equitable in the long run.
