Recent parliament debates on President Halimah Yacob’s address highlighted the need to step up support for the disadvantaged and vulnerable segments in our society, among other priorities. To truly uplift our society, Dr Ong EeCheng from the NUS Department of Economics and Assoc Prof Irene Ng from the NUS Department of Social Work, feel that we need to bolster not just individual workers, but also their families. And the answer to this may come from the reimagination of a policy – the Workfare Income Supplement.
