Given the increased attention being paid to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues today, Professor (Practice) of Accounting Mak Yuen Teen from NUS Business School opines that Singapore should consider more fully embedding ESG factors into corporate governance principles, and reconsider practices that are largely driven by the pursuit of shareholder value. As an example, Professor Mak adds that Singapore companies should expand the mix of skills, knowledge and experience on their boards, to include experience in material ESG issues relevant to the company and sector.
