With most societies placing a premium on physical beauty, there is a link between appearance and worth, where physical beauty is a sign of inner beauty and overall worth and a form of measurement as to whether we deem ourselves to be a success or a failure. While studies have shown that physical attractiveness is a privilege, the other side of it is lookism, a prejudice or discrimination against the unattractive says Adjunct Prof Chong Siow Ann, from the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.
