Rachel Meyer Prize

Presented by the Trustees of the Rachel Meyer Charitable Trust, a capital sum of £500 in 3 1 / 2 % British War Loans is to be applied for the purpose of endowing an annual prize to be awarded in alternate years in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Science. The first award was made in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

  1. The prize, valued at $100, is awarded to the best woman student in the relevant Faculty on the results of the Final Examination in Arts and Social Sciences or of the Examination for the pass Final degree of B.Sc.
  2. Subject to rule 3 below, the prize shall be awarded annually by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Faculty in which the award is to be made.
  3. If in any year, in the opinion of the Board of Undergraduate Studies, there is no candidate of sufficient merit, no award shall be made.
  4. Any income not expended in any year shall accumulate in the capital sum.
  5. The prize will be in the form of cash.
  6. A recommendation for the award of the prize shall be made by the Faculty concerned at the meeting at which the Faculty receives the relevant examiners' reports for the Final Examinations referred to in rule 1 above.

 

Raffles Prize

The excess fund of $7,878.52 from the amount raised at the 40th Anniversary celebration of the former Department of Zoology and a donation in 1996 of $7,121.48 from Associate Professor Peter K. L. Ng, Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Science, form the capital sum of $15,000, the proceeds of which are used for the award of the Raffles Prize. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the prize will be awarded to the best student in LSM3261- Life Form and Function. The candidate must be a student majoring in Life Sciences in the area of concentration of Biology.
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The prize will be in the form of cash.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Ramalingam Medal

Donated in 1997 by the family of the late Mr. S. Ramalingam, a gold medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $27,000. With a change of curriculum, the medal will be awarded to the student in BA (Arch) III course who has distinguished himself in the Architectural Structures & Construction Technology course. In AY04/05 there will be an overlap whereby the medal would also be awarded to the student of the Master of Architecture I course who has distinguished himself in the Building Technology course.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the student must have passed all the courses in their respective courses in the first and same sitting.
  2. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies and Board of Undergraduate Studies respectively on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Rashid Tahir The Kids Dentist Medal and Prize

In 2018, Dr Mohamed Azharashid Bin Mohamed Tahir donated an expendable gift of S$15,000 to establish a prize, in recognition of academic excellence amongst the graduates from Paediatric Dentistry.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize valued at $1,000 will be given annually to the best student in Paediatric Dentistry in the final Masters of Dental Surgery Examination, who has:
    • Minimum A- grade for final year examination; and
    • Minimum Grade of B+ in Year 2
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statute and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

RCSC BES Prize

In 2017, the Prize was established to encourage and recognise excellence in our Bachelor of Environmental Studies (BES) undergraduate students. The Prize is funded by an expendable gift sum of $30,000 raised by the Rotary Club of Suntec City (RCSC).

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 6 below, the cash prize will be given to outstanding students with the best theses in the field of environmental sustainability.
  2. The cash prize quantum will be subject to the availability of the distributable return from the endowed fund.
  3. The theses will be assessed by a Selection Committee comprising the Director and the Deputy Director of BES.
  4. The award is open to all BES undergraduate students.
  5. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  6. No award shall be made if there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  7. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

REDAS Gold Medal

Donated in 1993 by the Real Estate Developers' Association of Singapore (REDAS), a gold medal is awarded annually from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000 to a deserving student from NUS Business School.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal will be awarded to the overall best student completing the course leading to the degree of Master of Science (Real Estate).
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Graduate Studies or its nominee.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit for the award, the Board of Graduate Studies or its nominee may, subject to funds being available, make additional awards in such manner as it deems fit.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statute and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Reginald Quahe Memorial Medals

The Reginald Quahe Memorial Fund was established in 1977 from donations received from the former University of Singapore Academic Staff Union and from former colleagues and friends of the late Mr Reginald Quahe in commemoration of his service to the former University of Singapore as Bursar and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. The proceeds of the capital sum of $82,190 are used for the award of bursaries and two gold medals. The award of the gold medals is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 2 below, the gold medals are awarded by the Board of Graduate/Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners:
    1. one to the best student in the Bachelor of Business Administration I Examination.
    2. one to the best graduate in the Master of Business Administration Examination.
  2. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. In the event of there being more than one candidate of equal merit, the relevant Board of Examiners will take into consideration the performance of the candidates during the year as well as their examination results.

 

Reuters Prizes

Donated in 1999 by Reuters Singapore Pte Ltd, two cash prizes are awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. The prizes are governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, two cash prizes, valued at $100 each, will be awarded to the two best graduating students of the Master of Science (Financial Engineering) course.
  2. The prizes will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.

 

Richard Gillis Prize

  1. Subject to there being a candidate of sufficient merit, the prize will be awarded each year to the graduating student pursuing a specialisation in Occupational and Environmental Health in the Master of Public Health Programme who achieves the best academic results and who also distinguishes himself/herself in the Industrial Hygiene component of the course.
  2. The prize will be awarded by the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners.
  3. The total amount awarded will be S$1,000, in the form of cash.

 

Rider Levett Bucknall Medal and Prize

Donated in 2012 by Rider Levett Bucknall, a gold medal and cash prize of $750 is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. The conditions of the award are as follows:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize of $750 will be awarded to a student from each graduating year in the Bachelor of Science (Project and Facilities Management) programme who has
    1. obtained at least an Honours (Distinction);
    2. achieved a combined average grade point of at least 4.5 for PF4102 Contract and Procurement Management and PF3205 Advanced Measurement; and
    3. been selected by an interview panel comprising a representative from the donor, the Programme Director, and a staff member nominated by the Head of Department.
  2. The medal and prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Robert C K Loh Prize for Top Student in Gerontology

Donated in 2009 by Dr Robert Loh Choo Kiat, the prize is awarded from the sum of $15,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, two cash prizes of $1,500 each, will be awarded to the two deserving undergraduate students majoring in Social Work in the Bachelor degree in FASS, who has attained the highest mark in course SW4229/SW4229HM, and highest mark in course SW3223 respectively. In case of a tie in a course's highest mark, the undergraduate student majoring in Social Work with the highest SJGPA (average grade point of all major courses read) will be awarded.
  2. The prize will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. No award will be made if the course is not offered.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Robert Lin Memorial Medals

In recognition of the services of Dr Robert C. Y. Lin, former professor of Pharmacology of the University, the members of the Faculty of Medicine and wellwishers donated $2,000 in 1969 for the award of the Robert Lin Silver Medal to the top student who passed with distinction in Pharmacology in one of the three examinations viz. Second Professional M.B.,B.S., Second Professional B.D.S. and Final BSc (Pharm Sci) (Hons) Examinations.

In memory of Dr Robert C.Y. Lin who passed away in September 1989, members of his family and staff of the Department of Pharmacology in the University donated a sum of $3,200 in 1989. The Robert Lin memorial medals fund was established from the total donations and the accrued interests for the award of the Robert Lin memorial medals.

In 2003, the medals were upgraded to gold and silver medals.

The awards are subject to the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, the Robert Lin memorial medals will be awarded from the proceeds of the capital sum as follows:
    1. One gold medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduates Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, to the student who is second in the Second Professional Examination for the degrees of M.B.,B.S.
    2. Two gold medals will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Pharmacology, one to each of the students who has passed with distinction and obtained the highest marks in Pharmacology for the examinations leading to the degree of B.D.S. and one to the student who obtained the highest marks in Pharmacology courses taken in the examinations leading to the degree of BSc (Pharm Sci) (Hons).
    3. One silver medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduates Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, to the student who is third in the Second Professional Examination for the degrees of M.B.,B.S.
    4. Two silver medals will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Pharmacology, one each to the second best student in Pharmacology for the examinations leading to the degrees B.D.S. & BSc (Pharm Sci) (Hons).
  2. Should the gold medal for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine not be awarded in any year, the silver medal for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine will be awarded to the student who is second in the Second Professional Examination for the degrees of M.B.,B.S.
  3. Should any of the gold medals for B.D.S. & BSc (Pharm Sci) (Hons) be not awarded in any year, the silver medal for the relevant examination will be awarded to the best student in the relevant Pharmacology examination.
  4. No awards will be made unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Roche Singapore Technical Operations Prize

Roche Singapore Technical Operations is a leader in research-focused healthcare with combined strengths in pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. The company aspires to be the most admired biotechnology production operation, respected for its world class innovation, engrained quality inspired people and operation excellence.

In 2016, Roche Singapore Technical Operations donated $15,000. Additional gifts of $15,000 and $11,000 were donated in 2017 and 2018 respectively, totalling their gifts to $41,000 to support prizes for undergraduate students.

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, a cash prize of $2,500 will be awarded to the top undergraduate student from each of the following departments:
    1. Department of Biomedical Engineering; and,
    2. Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering.
  2. The award is governed by the following conditions:
    1. The prize winner(s) must have achieved good performance for his/her Industrial Attachment (based on company’s thesis advisor and NUS mentor feedback, student’s statement, etc.); and,
    2. The prize winner(s) must be the top undergraduate student in overall academic performance with a minimum GPA of 4.0 out of 5.0.
  3. The prizes will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or its nominee.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically NUS Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Rosie Heng-Ko Poh Choo Gold Medal and Prize

The Rosie Heng-Ko Poh Choo Gold Medal was established in 1999 by Mr Michael Heng Swee Hai in memory of his wife, Ms Rosie Ko Poh Choo, with a capital sum of $15,000. From 2016, the name of the prize was changed to Rosie Heng-Ko Poh Choo Gold Medal and Prize” and a cash prize of $400 was added to complement the gold medal. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, a gold medal and cash prize of $400 will be awarded to the best female Bachelor of Social Sciences graduate from the Department of Sociology who has attained at least an Honours (Distinction) from FASS.
  2. The award will be made by the Department on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

 

Runme Shaw Medal and Prizes

Donated in 1982 by the Shaw Foundation, the medal and prizes were initially awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $10,000. In 1989, the Shaw Foundation donated a further sum of $20,000, increasing the capital sum to $30,000.

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, each of the awards will be made annually by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
    1. (a) A gold medal and cash prize of not more than $200 will be awarded to the best student completing the Honours Examination in Microbiology.
      (b) The value of the cash prize will be determined by the Board of Undergraduate Studies after considering the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
    2. (a) Two cash prizes will be awarded as follows: one to the student who obtain the highest marks for LSM3232 Microbiology Examinations; and one to the student who obtains the highest marks for LSM3242 Applied Microbiology Examinations.
      (b) The value to be distributed to each of the prizes will be determined by the Board of Undergraduate Studies after considering the recommendations of the relevant Board of Examiners, provided that no prize may exceed $200.
  2. No award will be made if, in any examination, in the Board of Undergraduate Studies' opinion, there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.
