INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION FOR THE VIRTUAL WORKPLACE

Description

Telecommuting is expected to be widely adopted in the new normal post Covid-19 lockdown. It is therefore essential for employees to learn how to communicate effectively on virtual platforms, where interpersonal communication is challenging because of the lack of visual cues from body language, facial expression and gestures. This course aims to help participants communicate effectively despite these challenges.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Course participants are expected to be able to apply the following skills in virtual workplace interactions:

  1. active and reflective listening skills
  2. giving and receiving feedback
  3. assertive communication skills
  4. conflict/negotiation skills

MODE OF TRAINING

The course adopts a blended approach that combines asynchronous e-learning with virtual facilitated workshop sessions on Zoom.

COURSE OUTLINE

Asynchronous e-learning 1

Self-paced Lecture Topics:

  • What was that?: understanding the difference between hearing and listening
  • Poor listening habits: understanding what factors hamper interpersonal communication for the virtual workplace
  • The degrees of active listening: crafting a rendition of the message using your own words/sentence structure

Tasks:

  • Online Quiz on LumiNUS to capture understanding of the above 3 learning points.

Contextualising a scenario for giving and receiving feedback: An online appraisal meeting OR online interview - Filling up a goals and achievement form for role play activity in Virtual session 1

Virtual facilitated session on Zoom (Session 1)

  • Using Crucial Conversations as a framework for the course (I)
  • Interactive input: Using attending, following and reflecting skills to be more intentional in practising active and reflective listening
  • Activity: A Kahoot quiz on active and reflective listening skills
  • Interactive input: Demonstrating effective online non-verbal communication in virtual workplace communication
  • Activity: Breakout group discussion on two sample videos of active listening
  • Interactive input: Providing constructive feedback with tact and sensitivity
  • Activity: An online appraisal meeting OR online interview roleplay – practice giving and receiving feedback, with peer/trainer feedback (to be recorded and access given to participants on LumiNUS)

 

Asynchronous e-learning 2

Self-paced Lecture Topics:

  • Exercising care in workplace communication: choosing the right words and employing the appropriate tone
  • How does it sound like?: Changing an aggressive/passive communication to an assertive one
  • Understanding the principles of conflict resolution and good negotiation skills

Tasks:

  • Online Quiz on LumiNUS to capture understanding of the above 3 learning points.
  • Preparation: Filling up a form as a pair/group for negotiation/conflict resolution meeting role play
  • Review and reflection of recording for online appraisal/interview roleplay in Session 1_ particpants share their reflections in LumiNUS forum to learn from others

 

Virtual facilitated session on Zoom (Session 2)

  • Using Crucial Conversations as a framework for the course (II)
  • Interactive input: Using the I-message and 3-part assertion message for virtual workplace communication
  • Activity: Breakout group discussion on assertive and culturally sensitive communication in a virtual workplace
  • Interactive input: Applying the principles of conflict resolution and good negotiation in a virtual workplace communication
  • Assessment: An online video conference meeting to negotiate/resolve conflict – practice assertive communication and resolving conflict/negotiating skills, with peer/trainer feedback (to be recorded and access given to participants on LumiNUS)

Participants will engage in role plays and gain immediate feedback from peers and the instructor.

PRE-REQUISITES

Minimum qualification: A diploma in any discipline

COURSE DATES & TIMES

Participants are to engage in asynchronous e-learning before each virtual meeting.  Asynchronous e-learning will be 3.5 hours in total.
