EFFECTIVE EMAIL WRITING

Description

Telecommuting is expected to be widely adopted in the new normal post Covid-19 lockdown.  As email and instant messaging replace in-person interactions, it is essential to have a good understanding of how word choice and grammar affects tone in written messages, and how this in turn impacts workplace relations. This course teaches participants strategies for writing audience-centered email messages that promote goodwill among email correspondents.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Course participants are expected to be able to apply the following skills in virtual workplace interactions

1. write audience-centred email messages
2. apply appropriate tone to build goodwill in email messages
3. demonstrate knowledge of using clear, concise and correct English in email messages

MODE OF TRAINING

The course adopts a blended approach that combines asynchronous e-learning with virtual facilitated workshop sessions on Zoom.

Asynchronous e-learning 1

  • Adapting your message to your reader and purpose
  • Selecting the right format for routine, sensitive and persuasive emails
  • Understanding the importance of good email etiquette

 

Virtual facilitated session on Zoom (Session 1)

  • Improving readability in email messages
  • Writing effective subject lines
  • Using the right tone and style
  • Building goodwill in email messages

 

Asynchronous e-learning 2

  • Understanding the 7Cs of good writing
  • Clarifying common language errors in emails

 

Virtual facilitated session on Zoom (Session 2)

  • Using contemporary email language
  • Using correct English grammar
  • Employing clear and concise writing techniques
  • Assessment: Write a routine/sensitive/persuasive email

 

PRE-REQUISITES

Minimum qualification: A diploma in any discipline

COURSE DATES & TIMES

Participants are to engage in asynchronous e-learning before each virtual meeting.  Asynchronous e-learning will be 3 hours in total

TRAINER

Ms Anita Toh is a lecturer at the Centre for English Language Communication at the National University of Singapore. Prior to this, she spent 8 years managing an English language centre at a private university in Malaysia. For the last 20 years, she has been developing and conducting a range of English language and business communication skills courses and workshops for undergraduates and working professionals. She enjoys coaching her students and clients to enhance their writing and presentation skills to convey their thoughts, ideas and feelings more effectively, powerfully and confidently.
