EFFECTIVE VIRTUAL TEAM COMMUNICATION

Description

Telecommuting is expected to be widely adopted in the new normal post Covid-19 lockdown. Physical distance poses challenges to remote teamwork and team problem-solving. This course aims to help participants learn how to build trust with remote team members, as well as to problem solve with geographically-dispersed teams.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Course participants are expected to be able to apply the following skills in virtual workplace interactions:

1. demonstrate awareness of strategies to build trust in virtual teams
2. apply strategies to facilitate and participate constructively in virtual meetings
3. apply brainstorming / problem solving strategies in virtual team discussions
4. apply critical and analytical thinking skills in virtual team problem solving

MODE OF TRAINING

The course adopts a blended approach that combines asynchronous e-learning with virtual facilitated workshop sessions on Zoom.

COURSE OUTLINE

Asynchronous e-learning 1

  • Understanding the framework on ‘the trust triangle’
  • Drafting a message that demonstrates empathy and transparency based on the understanding of the above framework (submit on Forum)
  • Considering suitable facilitation techniques for virtual meetings
  • Reflecting on previous virtual meetings as an attendee or a facilitator (Forum Discussion)

Virtual facilitated session on Zoom (Session 1)

  • Applying the trust framework in the workplace
  • Contemplating practical ways to build and rebuild trust
  • Developing preparedness and clarity in facilitating and participative skills, including turn-taking, active listening, verbal and non-verbal communicative strategies
  • Using an online platform effectively for virtual discussions
  • Activity: A meeting role play - to effectively facilitate and participate in a virtual meeting (to be recorded and access given to participants on LumiNUS)

 

Asynchronous e-learning 2

  • Critique brainstorming and problem solving techniques (Forum Discussion)
  • Plan for a virtual team problem solving discussion (Preparation for Session 2 - planning to be done on Google Documents)
  • Understand ‘second level thinking’ skills, which includes questioning techniques, involving others, keeping options open, thinking long term
  • An online quiz to capture the understanding of the skills above

 

Virtual facilitated session on Zoom (Session 2)

  • Analyse effective brainstorming and problem solving process and steps involved on Google Docs and other online platforms
  • Develop a workable plan considering who, what, when, which, how in virtual discussions
  • Demonstrate critical and analytical thinking skills in a team
  • Assessment: Hosting/evaluating a brainstorming / problem solving meeting  (to be recorded and access given to participants on LumiNUS)

 

Participants will engage in role plays and gain immediate feedback from peers and the instructor.

PRE-REQUISITES

Minimum qualification: A diploma in any discipline

COURSE DATES & TIMES

Participants are to engage in asynchronous e-learning before each virtual meeting.  Asynchronous e-learning will be 3.5 hours in total

TRAINER

Ms Doreen Tan has over 13 years of teaching experience in a range of English and Communication courses.  Having worked and taught in Singapore, Thailand, Glasgow and London, she has developed a passion in helping learners of all ages and across cultures gain competence and confidence in their daily communication needs.  She enjoys conducting workshops on Workplace Communication such as effective presentation and facilitation skills, panel discussions and writing effective minutes.  She also coaches tertiary students at a Hall of Residence on topics like Happiness at work, Leadership, Assertiveness and Cooperation, and Working in Teams.
