Seeing Through Touch: Helixians Experience Dialogue in the Dark

On 19th February, 2025, Helixians once again had the opportunity to take part in Dialogue in the Dark, an immersive experience that offers insight into the daily challenges faced by the visually impaired. Organized by Block 16’s Resident Fellow, A/Prof Dan McAllister, this Helix Signature Event was held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where participants embarked on a thought-provoking journey through complete darkness.

Guided by a visually impaired facilitator, Helixians navigated different environments using only a walking cane, relying on their senses of touch, sound, and smell. They experienced everyday tasks such as crossing the road, exploring a park, reading braille, shopping at a marketplace, and even dining in a café  without the aid of sight. The tour provided a glimpse into how visually impaired individuals adapt to their surroundings and emphasized the importance of accessibility and inclusion in society.

For many, the experience was eye-opening, fostering empathy and a newfound appreciation for the everyday conveniences often taken for granted. The event left a lasting impact, reminding participants of the power of resilience and the importance of creating a more inclusive world for all.
