Types of Academic Dress

Bachelor's Academic Dress

The Academic Dress for all Bachelor's degrees (except for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree which includes satin crimson front pleats), comprises of a dark blue gown (with distinguished long, pointed sleeves), hood and black mortarboard with black tassel*.

In addition, the precision fluting around the shoulders and back create a smooth elegant flow. The color of the satin lining of the hood corresponds with the field of study.

The Academic Dress for the Yale-NUS Bachelor’s degrees comprises a black gown in the same design, hood with blue and white trim, orange printed sash with blue trim and black mortarboard.

*Note: The blue USP tassel may only be worn at USP ceremony. Students who are attending other ceremonies will need to wear the black tassel.

Master's Academic Dress

The Academic Dress for all Master’s degrees (except for Master of Dental Surgery and Master of Medicine degrees, see below), comprises of a dark blue gown (with distinctive elongated sleeves, a cord and button in the middle of the back yoke, and twin front pleats to allow for movement), hood and black mortarboard with black tassel*. The color of the satin lining of the hood corresponds with the field of study.

The Academic Dress for Master of Dental Surgery comprises of a dark blue gown with crimson satin bell sleeves and front panels.

The Academic Dress Master of Medicine degrees comprises of a dark blue gown with crimson and russet-brown satin bell sleeves and front panels.

Doctoral Academic Dress

With effect from 2016, all Doctoral degree graduates, regardless of discipline, wear gowns of the same design.

The Academic Dress for all Doctoral degrees (except for Professional Doctoral degrees, see below), comprises of a blue gown with green trimmings on the front panels and bell sleeves, hood (lined in blue and green trimmed edges) and cotton bonnet with a cord and tassel in green (that matches the gown trimmings).

The Academic Dress for Professional Doctoral degrees (applicable to Doctor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Engineering degrees only) is similar to the Doctoral degrees gowns except with peach trimmings.

The gowns, modelled after the Honorary Degree Academic Dress, possesses a clean, classic, and elegant look. The gown is made to last – it is a comfortable polyester blend material which lends a stately air to wearers for years to come!
