Information for Returning National Servicemen (RNS)

NUS will reserve a place for you if you are serving full-time National Service (NS) in Singapore. You will only enrol after the completion of your full-time NS obligation, or if you are granted disruption by MINDEF.

If you have accepted a place in Medicine, you will be considered for Local Medical Disruption Scheme (LMDS) by MINDEF automatically. You do not need to submit a request to NUS for early enrolment.

To relinquish your reserved place in NUS, you can contact the University with your full name, NRIC, undergraduate degree programme reserved and scheduled enrolment year on the following matters via Ask Admissions :

  • Relinquish place reserved.

The University will send you an email notification in November / December 2023 if you are due to enrol in the University in August 2024. For more information, refer to the Confirmation of Enrolment Exercise.

If you wish to enrol before completing your National Service, complete and submit the RNS Early Enrolment Request Form to the University with relevant documents confirming your disruption approved by MINDEF, SPF or SCDF. This will assist the University in reviewing your early enrolment request.

To apply for a change of undergraduate degree programme while serving full-time NS, you can submit a fresh admission application based on the application window of the application group. Indicate only the undergraduate programme you wish to be considered for in your new application.

Your reserved undergraduate programme will be automatically withdrawn if your new application is successful, regardless of your acceptance decision.

If you do not wish to accept the new offer of admission, it would be advisable for you to:

  • Submit an appeal during the appeal period to reinstate your previous reserved undergraduate degree programme. The success of your appeal will be at the discretion of the University, and
  • Accept the new offer of admission, while waiting for the outcome of your appeal.

If you are unsuccessful in your new application, you will remain in the reserved undergraduate programme if you have accepted it earlier.

Places will only be reserved for applicants serving full-time National Service (NS) in Singapore as they are required to complete their NS liability before pursuing tertiary education.

RNS with existing service obligations (such as employment/scholarship bond) should apply for admission only when these obligations have been discharged and they are ready to commence classes in the year of application for admission to NUS.

If you are unable to enrol in August 2024, complete and return the RNS Deferment Request Form with the relevant supporting documents to the University by the stipulated date on the form.
