Event Details

Janger: The Meditation is a mesmerizing cultural spectacle featuring students of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies' class SE2224 working in collaboration with dancers and musicians from Kaki Bebek Haus in Bali and Eka Suwara Santhi (Singapore).

Janger is a traditional Balinese dramatic form involving dance, song, and music. It is unique to Bali and found nowhere else in Indonesia. The origins of Janger are uncertain but we do know that it was being performed regularly by the 1920s, reaching its height of popularity in the 1940s and 50s. Janger performances are very well-loved by the Balinese as they incorporate stylistic dance moves and catchy songs. For NUS's Janger: The Meditation, the artists will present a classical form of Janger, called Janger Melampahan, that involves narrative theater. The tale presented is taken from the Mahabarata epic. In the story, Arjuna, the handsome prince of the Pandawa clan, meditates in the forest and is tested by the god Siwa. Siwa is impressed by Arjuna's ability to stay calm and focused despite the trails set upon him and rewards the prince with a magic arrow.

Tickets: $15 (tickets are to be collected on 15 November 2025 at the front of house (LT13) from 5.00pm to 6.30pm)
