As an educator, I believe that very few students truly need all the content we’ve been teaching for decades. What they do need are the inclinations and competencies that our subjects are really proxies for: empathy, modesty, curiosity, grit and the ability to communicate their purpose and value beyond the classroom. As such, my goal as an educator is to help students find and develop their personality in an increasingly digital world. Critical Geography is a useful proxy because it provides students the opportunities to frame themselves in relation to the world, and the worlds they want to help create. I consider a student ‘successful’ when they are able to intrinsically define and commit to something they want to do after graduating from university, in whichever field of interest.
