Teaching, engaging with students, and exploring new approaches to learning have been central to my journey as an educator. Since joining NUS Mechanical Engineering in 2016, I have focused on creating a student-centred environment grounded in real-world relevance. By integrating technology, industry perspectives, and active learning, I aim to move beyond traditional lectures to deepen understanding and improve learning outcomes. I believe strongly in nurturing a learning community built on engagement, collaboration, and continuous reflection with both students and colleagues.
Daniel Sng, Deputy Head (Outreach and Student Life) and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is passionate about making engineering education more engaging and student-centred. After noticing recurring conceptual errors in his ME2121 classes, he adopted Team-Based Learning and introduced bite-sized videos to support self-paced learning. He shares his approaches through communities of practice, cross-faculty collaborations, and workshops, inspiring colleagues and contributing a chapter to a teaching pedagogy book on student-centred learning. Beyond the classroom, he advises student clubs within and beyond the department, fostering interdisciplinary, student-led initiatives in sustainability. His teaching philosophy centres on sparking curiosity, encouraging critical thinking, and preparing adaptable engineers for real-world challenges.
As a Fellow of the Teaching Academy, I look forward to sharing my experiences in making engineering education more engaging and student-focused, while learning from others in our teaching community. I plan to explore and share ways to extend student learning beyond the classroom into real-world and community projects, and to harness AI as a learning buddy to support and personalise the engineering education experience.
