Director's Message

Welcome to the NUS Environmental Research Institute.

We live at a defining moment for our planet. Environmental challenges are growing in scale, complexity, and urgency. They shape not only the future of ecosystems, but also the health and resilience of communities around the world. To tackle these pressing challenges, research must do more than deepen understanding. It must inspire new possibilities, drive meaningful change, and lead to solutions that can be implemented and scaled for lasting impact.

It is my great honour to serve as Director of the NUS Environmental Research Institute. I believe the Institute has a vital role to play in advancing bold, interdisciplinary research that addresses today’s environmental issues while meeting the needs of tomorrow. Our mission is not only to generate fundamental knowledge, but also to transform discovery into practical, scalable outcomes that can benefit Singapore, the region, and the wider world.

At the heart of our work is the strong belief that the most pressing environmental problems cannot be solved in isolation. There is a need for collaboration across scientific disciplines, strong partnerships with industry and government, and a shared commitment to innovation in service of society. By bringing together talented researchers and collaborators, we aim to create solutions that are scientifically rigorous, globally relevant, and capable of being adopted at scale.

As part of the National University of Singapore, we are uniquely positioned to help build a more sustainable and resilient future through excellence in research, education, and engagement. We aspire to nurture the next generation of environmental leaders, strengthen connections across sectors and borders, and build an ecosystem where ideas can move from the laboratory to real-world applications.

I look forward to working with our faculty, researchers, alumni, and partners. Building on the Institute’s strong foundation, we can collectively shape a future in which environmental research not only informs progress but also enables transformation. Together, we can advance solutions that are ambitious in vision, grounded in science, and scalable in impact.
