Overview

Climate change is a global crisis that becomes more pressing with each passing year. Countries are urged to get to net zero emissions by or around the middle of the century, to keep alive the ambition of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Companies have also made net-zero pledges and making investments both to reduce emissions from their own operations and mitigate climate change outside their value chains.

Green technologies and nature-based solutions are being developed and deployed to reduce emissions. Interest in carbon credits from both technology and nature-based projects are growing as countries seek to use international cooperation towards meeting their Nationally Determined Contributions and companies look to offset emissions that they are unable to reduce via mitigation.

This one-day programme is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and perspectives to address climate change in their workplace. It will provide in-house counsel and lawyers with an understanding of the legal and regulatory issues they should be aware of when advising management and clients, as well as helping to promote internal efforts to achieve sustainability within the workplace. Upon completion, participants will have a better grasp of the legal and regulatory issues arising from getting to net-zero.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the international climate regime and how Singapore implements the Paris Agreement
  • Assess legal and regulatory developments on carbon markets to inform decisions that are aligned with organisational goals and compliance requirements
  • Identify latest standards and best practices in ESG that companies should adopt
  • Understand company directors’ fiduciary duties to ensure legal and regulatory compliance

Key topics will include:

  • Understanding the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement
  • Legal and Regulatory Issues in Carbon Markets
  • Latest Developments in Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
  • Companies and Climate Change: Directors’ Duties and Disclosure Obligations
