Kamalakannan Raja (Kannan)
Academic Qualifications
BSc in Zoology, Bangor University, Wales, United Kingdom (2018)
Research Areas
Road ecology; habitat fragmentation; ecological connectivity; herpetology
Research Interests
Kannan's research interests are in exploring road ecology in and around cities, and he hopes to use improved habitat connectivity to aid better-informed conservation and development efforts. He is particularly interested in wildlife-vehicle collision interactions in relation to habitat fragmentation and degraded ecological connectivity. In addition, he is keen to explore herpetofauna-vehicle collisions in the region to understand better the spread and movement of herps around disturbed and developing areas.
Biography
Kannan is currently a PhD student at CNCS’s Lab for Advancing Protection of biodiversity with Innovative Solutions (LAPIS). Before this, he was a full-time teaching assistant with the Department of Biological Sciences and the College of Humanities and Sciences; with the latter, he taught scientific thinking and empirical analysis through interdisciplinary workshops, lab practicals, and lectures. Kannan is also President of the Herpetological Society of Singapore and a member of the Vertebrate Study Group (Nature Society Singapore), and an active member of the greater nature community in Singapore, lending his voice and expertise to discussions concerning conservation, policymaking, and research. Active in public outreach, Kannan often does talks, outreach booths, and guided walks to bring awareness about the herpetofauna of Singapore
