Hello and a warm welcome to NUS!
Thank you for your interest in visiting our website and I invite you to explore the many fascinating facets of our university. You will find that the NUS community is incredibly diverse and rich. As a leading English-speaking, global university centred in Asia, the NUS experience is also distinctively global and Asian. Our 30,000 students hail from 100 countries, with international students making up 20 per cent and 50 per cent of the undergraduate and graduate enrolment respectively. Our talented faculty are drawn from Singapore and the best centres around the world, with about half coming from overseas.
Within this environment, we offer students a rigorous broad-based education with great flexibility and choice. I am particularly pleased with the strong global orientation of our programmes. About 50 per cent of our undergraduates have an overseas educational exposure, with 20 per cent spending a semester or more abroad. Our five NUS Overseas Colleges provide a year of intense experiential entrepreneurship education in vibrant entrepreneurial hubs in the US, China, Sweden and India. NUS has more than 60 double-degree and joint-degree programmes with top universities internationally, allowing our students unparalleled access to some of the best professors in the world, while gaining valuable cross-cultural exposure.
The research excellence of our talented faculty has helped propel NUS to be internationally known in areas of engineering, life sciences and biomedicine, social sciences and natural sciences. In recent years, we have developed major research thrusts in several fields including quantum technology; cancer and translational medicine; finance, risk management and real estate; Asian studies; interactive and digital media; and the environment and water. We hope that our research will contribute much needed knowledge in these important areas and to find innovative solutions that will positively impact society.
I am privileged to serve a university with such a distinguished heritage, one which has nurtured many illustrious scholars and leaders over the course of more than a hundred years. From a modest medical school founded in 1905, we are now a renowned global institution looking forward to the future with great optimism and excitement.
