“Gig economy” refers to a broad range of workers that are employed through short-term contracts or freelance work as opposed to long-term permanent jobs. Traditionally, the term “gig workers” referred to musicians, artists, drivers, writers, etc.
The actual concept of using a contingent workforce has been around for many years, particularly in industries such as technology. In recent years, short-term contracts and freelance work has increased significantly.
