Overview

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree is not only an undergraduate honours degree; it is also a professional degree that is recognised for admission to practice in Singapore. Our graduates have also been admitted to practice in Malaysia, in several Commonwealth jurisdictions such as Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom, and some states in the United States such as California and New York. The programme is open to both Singaporean and international students.

The four-year LLB programme is available on a full-time basis and leads to the LLB (Hons) degree:

Admission requirements vary, depending on the qualifications presented for admissions. Shortlisted candidates are required to sit for a written test and attend a formal interview, usually held in mid-April. Selection shall be solely based on the discretion of the University and will depend upon the number of places available in the Faculty.

Curriculum Structure & Degree Requirements

Bachelor of Laws (Undergraduate Compulsory Core Curriculum)

The LLB degree is an honours degree. Students in the four year LLB programme must complete a minimum total of 160 units in four years.

Successful completion of the LLB programme leads to the award of the following classes of degrees:

First Class Honours
Second Class Honours (Upper Division)
Second Class Honours (Lower Division)
Third Class Honours

All LLB students are required to take the same compulsory core law courses during the first two years of their studies, as well as a combination of compulsory courses and elective courses in the third and fourth years of their studies. Students may choose from a wide variety of elective courses, allowing them to pursue their interest in a particular field of law. One formidable strength of NUS Law is the broad and diverse range of elective courses that we offer. Students choose courses from many clusters including Asian Legal Studies, Civil Law, Corporate & Financial Services Law, Intellectual Property & Technology Law, International & Comparative Law, International Arbitration & Dispute Resolution, Maritime Law, Private Law, Law & Society, Research and Skills.

Exchange Plus Programmes

Exchange Plus Programmes are available to students on the four-year LLB programme. Under these arrangements, students will complete three years at NUS and then go to one of our partner universities to read an LLM for one year. Upon successful completion of the LLM, NUS Law students will graduate with an LLB (Hons) from NUS and an LLM from the partner university.

International Mooting and other Competitions

NUS has established an international reputation for mooting because of the outstanding record of its teams in international mooting competitions. One of the most valuable and educational experiences a student can have at NUS is to be a member of an international moot team. NUS has participated in many international mooting competitions.

Internship Programmes

The Law School encourages our undergraduates to acquaint themselves with legal work through vacation internships with local and foreign law firms, companies and institutions, the Legal Service and other government authorities. Around 85-90% of students do an internship during their time at the Law School and there is no lack of internship places available. As such, the Law School has made a conscious decision not to make internships a compulsory part of the curriculum, preferring to give our students the flexibility to use their vacation time to pursue other interests, including doing voluntary work.

Financial Assistance and Awards

NUS offers a variety of scholarships and awards in recognition of outstanding academic achievements, leadership qualities and special talents. We are also committed to a needs-blind merit-based admission policy that ensures no deserving student is denied a university education because of financial difficulty. To fulfill this commitment a Student Financial Aid Unit has been set up within the Office of Admissions to provide a visible and integrated approach to assist students with financial difficulties or concerns. Various bursaries and loans are available for our undergraduates.

The Faculty also has a list of medals and prizes awarded to students who have achieved high academic performance. The top students in the respective LLB cohorts, and several subject prizes, will be awarded after the semester two examinations.
