A supervisor or supervisors will be appointed for each candidate. Students are required to attend appropriate lectures and sit for written examinations.<\/p>\r\n<p>The following degrees are awarded upon completion of the research programme:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Master of Science (MSc) or<\/li>\r\n<li>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>All applicants are admitted into the MSc or PhD programme. For students pursuing PhD candidature, they must pass the Qualifying Examination by the fourth semester.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Candidature<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>The period of candidature ranges from a minimum of one year to a maximum of three years for MSc and a minimum of two years to a maximum of five years for PhD<\/p>\r\n<p>Research candidates may be admitted as full-time or part-time students. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature are the same.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Programme Intake<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>There are two intakes per academic year: one in January and the other in August. Please note that applications must be submitted to the departments by <u>15 May<\/u> for the January intake, and by <u>15 November<\/u> (for international students) for the August intake respectively.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Degree\u00a0Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><u>A. Coursework Requirements<\/u><\/p>\r\n<p>Candidates pursuing higher degrees by research are required to attend and pass examinations in a minimum of three modules (two coursework modules and one compulsory seminar module) for MSc and a minimum of six modules (five coursework modules and one compulsory seminar module) for PhD. These courses are to be chosen in consultation with their thesis supervisor(s) and\/or department(s). The specific coursework requirements for the respective departments in the Faculty of Science are as follows:<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>1. Department of Biological Sciences<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>PhD<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) modular credits (MCs) consisting of\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>BL5198 Graduate Seminar Module in Biological Sciences<\/li>\r\n<li>NG5001 Academic Communication for Graduate Researchers<\/li>\r\n<li>Five (5) BL-coded graduate modules<\/li>\r\n<li>MB5104 &#8211; An Integrative Approach to Understanding Cell Functions (only for students under the Biophysics and Cell &amp; Molecular Biology research groups. This is to be read during student&#8217;s first semester of study)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>Students may read up to two graduate-level modules from other departments (subject to approval)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>MSc<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Complete a minimum of twelve (12) modular credits (MCs) consisting of\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>BL5198 Graduate Seminar Module in Biological Sciences<\/li>\r\n<li>Two (2) BL-coded graduate modules<\/li>\r\n<li>MB5104 &#8211; An Integrative Approach to Understanding Cell Functions (only for students under the Biophysics and Cell &amp; Molecular Biology research groups. Department of Pharmacy<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>PhD<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) modular credits (MCs) consisting of\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>PR5198 Graduate Seminar Module in Pharmacy<\/li>\r\n<li>One (1) other PR-coded graduate module in addition to PR5198<\/li>\r\n<li>For the remaining graduate modules, the students may read additional PR-coded graduate modules or non PR-coded graduate modules subjected to the justification and approval by the supervisor<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>MSc<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Complete a minimum of twelve (12) modular credits (MCs) consisting of\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>PR5198 Graduate Seminar Module in Pharmacy<\/li>\r\n<li>One (1) other PR-coded graduate module in addition to PR5198<\/li>\r\n<li>For the remaining one (1) graduate module, the student may read an additional PR-coded graduate module or one non PR-coded graduate module subjected to the justification and approval by the supervisor<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>6. Department of Mathematics<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>PhD<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>MA5198 Graduate Seminar Module in Mathematics<\/li>\r\n<li>Eight (8) level 5000 or above MA-coded modules, with at least four (4) from Department&#8217;s Basic Graduate module list amounting to a minimum of thirty-two (32) modular credits (MCs)<\/li>\r\n<li>Students may read up to two (2) Level 5000 and above modules from other departments (subject to departmental approval)<\/li>\r\n<li>Additional fee may be applicable for reading certain modules. Department of Statistics and Applied Probability<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>PhD<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) modular credits (MCs) consisting of:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>ST5198 Graduate Seminar Module in Statistics<\/li>\r\n<li>ST5214 Advanced Probability Theory<\/li>\r\n<li>ST5215 Advanced Statistical Theory<\/li>\r\n<li>ST5222 Advanced Topics in Applied Statistics<\/li>\r\n<li>ST5224 Advanced Statistical Theory II<\/li>\r\n<li>Any other one (1) ST-coded graduate module<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>Students may read up to two graduate-level modules from other departments (subject to approval)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>MSc<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) modular credits (MCs) consisting of:\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>ST5198 Graduate Seminar Module in Statistics<\/li>\r\n<li>ST5214 Advanced Probability Theory<\/li>\r\n<li>ST5215 Advanced Statistical Theory<\/li>\r\n<li>Any other three (3) ST-coded graduate module<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>Students may read up to two graduate-level modules from other departments (subject to approval)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><u>B.Thesis\/Dissertation<\/u><\/p>\r\n<p>Candidates must submit, through the supervisor(s) and the Head of Department, his\/her thesis\/dissertation for examination within the maximum period of candidature. The thesis\/dissertation must be on a topic approved by the respective departments and must make some contribution to knowledge and not be a mere collation of existing materials. The thesis\/dissertation must contain original work or critical interpretation worthy of publication.<\/p>\r\n<p><u>C.
