Prof. Tedrick Lew&#8217;s Latest Breakthrough in Sustainable Agriculture<\/h1>\r\n<p>The latest innovation by Assistant Professor Tedrick Lew from NUS Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and NUS Environmental Research Institute (NERI), in the field of sustainable plant health management was recently published in Nature Communications (<a title=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-60112-w\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-60112-w\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-025-60112-w<\/a>).<\/p>\r\n<p>This technology, a stomata-targeting nanocarrier platform, named\u00a0<b>S<\/b>urface ligand-<b>E<\/b>ngineered\u00a0<b>N<\/b>anoparticles for targeted\u00a0<b>D<\/b>elivery to\u00a0<b>S<\/b>tomata (SENDS) has the ability to enhance plant resistance against pathogen infection through precise and sustainable means.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Stomata_Green\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/neri\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Stomata_Green.jpg\" alt=\"Stomata_Green\" width=\"1202\" height=\"1600\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Stomata\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/neri\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Stomata.jpg\" alt=\"Stomata\" width=\"842\" height=\"1114\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p><em>Image 1a and b: Stomata, tiny pores on the leaf surface, are key entry points for plant pathogens. Stomata-targeting nanoparticles can block pathogen entry into plant tissues<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>Upon simple spraying, this new type of nanoparticles can precisely target the stomata\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0the key entry points for most plant pathogens &#8211; to stop bacterial entry into the leaf tissues. These nanoparticles are composed of zinc\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0an essential plant micronutrient\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0making them both effective and environmentally friendly.<\/p>\r\n<p>In contrast to conventional chemical pesticides that can build up in the environment, these zinc-based nanoparticles degrade naturally and leave minimal ecological footprint. The research shows that they can release the loaded agrochemicals at the stomata and substantially reduce bacterial infections in crops, all while avoiding the toxic side effects of conventional treatments.<\/p>\r\n<p>This research marks a paradigm shift from simply monitoring plant health to proactively enhancing plant resilience through the use of safe and sustainable nanomaterials.
