{"id":5858,"date":"2023-10-26T17:25:38","date_gmt":"2023-10-26T09:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/neri\/?page_id=5858"},"modified":"2023-10-27T10:17:50","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T02:17:50","slug":"treating-wastewater-powered-by-sunlight-it-is-a-reality","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/neri\/research\/research-features\/treating-wastewater-powered-by-sunlight-it-is-a-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Treating Wastewater powered by Sunlight &#8211; It is a Reality!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1>\n\t\tTreating Wastewater powered by Sunlight &#8211; It is a Reality!\n\t<\/h1>\n\t<p>Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/cde.nus.edu.sg\/cee\/staff\/olivier-patrick-lefebvre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Assoc Prof Olivier Lefebvre<\/a> (with his research team at NERI and <a href=\"https:\/\/cde.nus.edu.sg\/cee\/cwr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centre for Water Research, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, NUS<\/a>), Assist Prof Hugo Olvera-Vargas from Universidad Nacional Aut\u00f3noma de M\u00e9xico (IER-UNAM) and Prof Hyacinthe Randriamahazaka from Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9, this once seen only in science fiction story has been made into a reality.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5861\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/neri\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Treating-Wastewater-powered-by-Sunlight-It-is-a-Reality-191x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The picture above shows the novel solar photoelectrocatalytic prototype treating wastewater<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Imagine the sun&#8217;s energy transformed into a force for good, capable of purifying our environment. That&#8217;s precisely what this research explores.<\/p>\n<p>Leveraging on the revolutionary hybrid photoelectrodes with Carbon Quantum Dots (CQDs) and Titanium Dioxide (TiO\u2082), an extraordinary partnership is harnessing the full potential of sunlight to degrade pollutants such as phenol (used as a model pollutant in the study) in the wastewater.<\/p>\n<p>The journey has moved beyond lab experiments. The team has ventured into the real world, testing the TiO\u2082-CQD photoanode in the wastewater treatment sector, specifically with wastewater from membrane fabrication. The results were stunning, demonstrating the photoelectrocatalytic efficiency under solar radiation. In just 8 hours, a remarkable 93% mineralization was achieved!
