NERI-CEE-SCELSE Seminar 22 Jan 2026
NERI, together with the NUS Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and SCELSE, hosted a seminar by Assoc. Prof. Kerry Hamilton (Arizona State University) on “Next‑generation quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) to quantify antimicrobial resistance risks in water and wastewater,” on 22 January 2026.
Prof. Hamilton addressed antimicrobial resistance (AMR)—a mounting global threat—and showed how One Health perspectives can be operationalised with QMRA to prioritise resources and uncover risk drivers across clinical, veterinary, and environmental domains. She presented an extended risk framework that moves beyond “one pathogen at a time,” capturing dynamic interactions among antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), antimicrobial‑resistant bacteria (ARB), and chemical stressors.
Through multi‑scale case studies, she integrated evidence from systematic reviews and meta‑analyses, lab and field measurements, and spatial datasets to pinpoint opportunities for managing AMR risks in water and wastewater. She also outlined how omics data can be coupled with QMRA to strengthen AMR risk assessment.
Thank you, Assoc. Prof. Hamilton, session chair - Prof. Karina Gin, and our partners at NUS CEE and SCELSE.
