All of us experience emotions. And most importantly, experiencing a range of emotions is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1009\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-2.png 1009w, https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-2-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-2-768x490.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1009px) 100vw, 1009px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, there definitely exist situations where we need to manage our emotions and find healthy ways to express them. &nbsp;And that is often the case at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, there is a misconception that suppressing our emotions &#8211; particularly negative ones &#8211; is an indication of our professionalism. However, dealing with these emotions is rarely about avoiding them. Much of it is about accepting that emotions occur and learning how to develop a healthy relationship with them &#8211; just like how we have learnt to live in an endemic and deal with uncertainties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how exactly can we better manage emotions? Here are some quick tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1014\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-3-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-3-1.png 1014w, https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-3-1-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/hwb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Article-3-1-768x498.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(1) <strong>Self-acceptance and Mindfulness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"a\"><li><strong>Don\u2019t deny your emotions<\/strong>: Acknowledge them. Denying emotions are more likely to end up in self-directed anger and downward spirals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Know that emotions come and go<\/strong>: According to neuroscientists, if you can prevent yourself from engaging in thoughts that led to your emotions, it just takes 90 seconds to flush out them!\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Take deep breaths:<\/strong>\u00a0inhaling and exhaling slowly until you calm down.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(2) <strong>Draw boundaries<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"a\"><li><strong>Work-life boundaries:<\/strong>\u00a0This can mean setting physical boundaries by designating a specific space for work (if you work remotely). It could also be doing your best to stick to your work hours and avoid the temptation to work OT \u2013 set an alarm to alert you when it&#8217;s time to shut off and continue working the next day. This could help you improve your productivity!<\/li><li><strong>Emotional boundaries:<\/strong>\u00a0For instance, it could mean saying \u201cI would love to help but I am not in the best headspace right now, could you look for someone else.\u201d<\/li><li><strong>Time boundaries:<\/strong>\u00a0Hold yourself accountable to a comfortable schedule and be realistic in your time management.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(3) <strong>Find healthy outlets\/coping mechanisms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Exercise, healthy diet, and quality relationships play a huge role in promoting emotional regulation (and overall happiness).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This letter was contributed by <strong>Ms. Zhang Yue<\/strong>, from the NUS Health and Wellbeing Team.&nbsp;The letter was&nbsp;first&nbsp;seen on <strong>DPA&#8217;s Letter to Colleagues<\/strong>, which can be accessed via <a href=\"https:\/\/dpa.nus.edu.sg\/\">https:\/\/dpa.nus.edu.sg\/.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dear colleagues, This is Andrew from the Health and Wellbeing Team and I am the guest contributor to DPA&#8217;s Letter to Colleagues this week.
