{"id":7432,"date":"2025-09-18T09:44:36","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T01:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/?page_id=7432"},"modified":"2025-09-19T10:55:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T02:55:20","slug":"diagnostic-english-test-det-copy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/diagnostic-english-test-det-copy\/","title":{"rendered":"Copy of Diagnostic English Test (DET)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n<h2  id=\"what_is_det\">\n\t\t\tWhat is the DET?\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>The DET, administered by the Centre for English Language Communication, is required for international graduate students from non-English-medium universities when stipulated by their faculties.<\/p>\n<p>The purposes of the DET are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Determine which students will benefit from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/graduate-courses\/es5000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate English I (ES5000)<\/a> before proceeding to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/graduate-courses\/es5001a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate English II (ES5001A)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Determine which students will benefit from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/graduate-courses\/es5001a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graduate English II (ES5001A)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Identify which students may be exempted from taking either of the above-mentioned courses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The DET will be conducted in digital format using Examplify with remote invigilation via Zoom.<\/p>\n<h2  id=\"information_registration\">\n\t\t\tInformation &#038; Registration\t<\/h2>\n\t<p><strong>DET2 Test date: <\/strong>9 December 2025 (Tuesday)<\/p>\n<p>Information on the DET may be obtained <a href=\"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/registrar\/academic-activities\/registration\/academic-related-matters\/det\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>BRIEFING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To register, please click on the preferred session below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thursday, 4 December 2025 (10:00 am) &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myaces.nus.edu.sg\/CoE\/ViewEvent?actionParam=VIEWEVENT&amp;eventID=107458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Session 1<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Important notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students may only sign up for one session.<\/li>\n<li>Students must use their student number to sign up for the briefing if they have completed Registration Part One.<\/li>\n<li>Students will receive their Zoom information for the DET2 briefing through their\u00a0<strong><u>NUS email address<\/u><\/strong><u>\u00a0by 5pm on Tuesday 2 December 2025<\/u>.<\/li>\n<li>Only students who have signed up for the briefing with a valid NUSNET ID will be added to Canvas on 2 December 2025 to complete the prebriefing quiz found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/canvas.nus.edu.sg\/courses\/84669\/quizzes\/70253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HERE<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2  id=\"preparation\">\n\t\t\tPreparation for the DET\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>There is no specific recommended preparation for the DET. Students will read two or more short texts and write an argumentative essay responding to a question related to the texts&#8217; topic. You will receive access to a sample DET paper at the briefing.<\/p>\n<p>The essay will be assessed for the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fulfilment of task in response to the prompt<\/li>\n<li>Synthesis of information from the texts to develop and support your argument<\/li>\n<li>Logical development of ideas<\/li>\n<li>Accuracy, fluency,\u00a0and use of\u00a0academic style<\/li>\n<li>Expression of ideas in writer&#8217;s voice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2  id=\"det_results_mean\">\n\t\t\tWhat do the DET results mean?\t<\/h2>\n\t<ul>\n<li>Students who obtain Band 1 will have to take <strong>ES5000<\/strong> followed by <strong>ES5001A.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Students who obtain Band 2 will have to take <strong>ES5001A.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Students who obtain Band 3 are exempted from <strong>ES5000<\/strong> and <strong>ES5001A.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PhD students (from Intake 2210) who obtain Band 3 are eligible to read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/graduate-courses\/ng5001-academic-communication-for-graduate-researchers\/\">NG5001<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>PhD students (from Intake 2210) who obtain a Band 1 and\/or Band 2 are required to complete ES5000 and\/or ES5001A before reading NG5001.<\/p>\n<p>Students required to read ES5000 or ES5001A will participate in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/myedurec.nus.edu.sg\/psp\/cs90prd\/?cmd=login&amp;languageCd=ENG&amp;\">Online Course Registration (EduRec)<\/a>. Please refer to the Office of the University Registrar&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/registrar\/academic-activities\/registration\/academic-related-matters\/det\">website<\/a>\u00a0for updates.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the courses, ES5000 and ES5001A, please refer to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/graduate-courses\/\">Graduate Courses<\/a>\u00a0page on CELC website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AI may be used to evaluate the QET\/DET submissions, under human supervision.
