Students will be guided to deconstruct and evaluate arguments; competencies students will use to write an abstract. Students will need to demonstrate the ability to use suitable academic conventions to produce effective writing. The abstract will subsequently be developed into an oral presentation to a cross-disciplinary audience.<\/p>\n<h4>\n\t\tObjectives\n\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>At the end of the course, students should be able to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\nThrough an academic literacies approach (Murray &amp; Nallaya, 2016), PhD students are given opportunities to develop awareness and hone skills necessary to communicate effectively in cross-disciplinary contexts. Students in this course will:\n<\/li>\n<li>\nread academic texts critically to gain an awareness of how writers across disciplines use language effectively;\n<\/li>\n<li>\nuse appropriate academic writing strategies to increase the impact of their research by making it accessible to the wider academic community;\n<\/li>\n<li>\nuse academic conventions and rhetorical strategies to produce effective oral presentations for cross-disciplinary audiences.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>\n\t\tAssessment\n\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>NG5001 is a 100% Continuous Assessment course.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>Students will write a proposal to answer a conference call-for-papers.<\/li>\n<li>Students will deliver an 8-minute presentation of their conference paper.<br \/>\nThere will be a 5-minute Question &amp; Answer session during which they will take questions from the audience. The presentation will be delivered in-person and in class.<\/li>\n<li>Students&#8217; class participation will be evaluated based on meaningful contribution to online and in-class activities.
