Students are introduced to four science communication models which shed light on the evolving assumptions made about the roles of and interactions between scientists, policymakers, and the public. Drawing upon these models, students critically analyse and evaluate how communication strategies are employed in written and spoken sources and apply them through public engagement opportunities during a field trip in a Southeast Asian country, where they interact with the local community and learn about their cultures and local practices.<\/p>\n<h4  id=\"objectives\">\n\t\t\tObjectives\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>By the end of the course, students should be able to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\ncritically read, synthesise, and analyse features of academic and popular science genres.\n<\/li>\n<li>\ncritically analyse and evaluate how science communication strategies help explain scientific concepts and ideas to a non-specialist audience\n<\/li>\n<li>\nwork effectively in a team to identify and explain scientific concepts using science communication strategies.\n<\/li>\n<li>\ncommunicate scientific concepts and ideas in a comprehensible, coherent and engaging manner to a non-specialist audience in both written and oral forms.\n<\/li>\n<li>\ndeepen understanding of Southeast Asian countries through interaction with the local community partners, appreciation of local practices, cultures, economies, sustainability efforts, or science-related explorations\/innovations.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4  id=\"assessment\">\n\t\t\tAssessment\t<\/h4>\n\t<ul>\n<li>SP1541X is a 100% Continuous Assessment course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4  id=\"prerequisites\">\n\t\t\tPrerequisites\t<\/h4>\n<p>Students who are required to read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/undergraduate-courses\/es1000-foundation-academic-english\/\">ES1000 Foundation Academic English<\/a> and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nus.edu.sg\/celc\/undergraduate-courses\/es1103-english-for-academic-purposes\/\">ES1103 English for Academic Purposes<\/a> must pass those courses before they are allowed to read this course.<\/p>\n<h4  id=\"preclusions\">\n\t\t\tPreclusions\t<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Non-CHS students<\/li>\n<li>Students who have read and passed FAS1101, ES2531, ES2631, ES2660, UTW1001% and RVX100%<\/li>\n<li>Students in SPS (Special Program in Science) who have read and passed SP2271 are precluded from SP1541 and SP1541X<\/li>\n<li>Students who have read and passed SP1541<\/li>\n<li>U-town students cannot select SP1541X<\/li>\n<li>RVRC students cannot select SP1541X<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4  id=\"modular-credits\">\n\t\t\tUnits\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>Four<\/p>\n<h4  id=\"workload\">\n\t\t\tWorkload\t<\/h4>\n\t<p>0-3-0-3-0-4<\/p>\n<h4  id=\"FAQ\">\n\t\t\tFAQ\t<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\">1. You will learn to apply science communication strategies to explain scientific concepts to a non-specialist audience in a Southeast Asian country during a 1-week experiential learning trip.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\">2. You will spend one day communicating the scientific knowledge you selected to a non-specialist audience as part of the final assessment. The rest of the week will be dedicated to experiential learning, with opportunities to explore the natural environment and\/or visit industries, as well as learn about local scientific, research and\/or conservation efforts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-4\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-4\">5. How will the trip be funded?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-6\"  tabindex=\"0\"><i title=\"Expand\">Expand<\/i><\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><u>AY2025\/2026 Semester 2<\/u><\/p>\n<p>SP1541X is an NUS Study Trip for Engagement &amp; EnRichment (STEER) programme. Full-time students (excluding exchange students) may apply for the <strong>NUS STEER Award<\/strong> with a value of $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible students may participate in multiple STEER programmes but are only eligible for a single STEER Award for the duration of your studies. Students holding other financial awards\/scholarships must ensure that you are allowed to hold this award concurrently. Students on concurrent degree, double degree and joint degree programmes <strong>may also not<\/strong> be eligible for the STEER award.<\/p>\n<p>Students who are not eligible for the STEER Award may apply for the <strong>NASA Enhancement Scholarship\/Bursary <\/strong>under the Faculty of Science. The Scholarship is granted to full-time undergraduate students of all nationalities and granted based on academic merit, whereas the Bursary is open to Singaporean students who have applied for NUS Financial Aid. Students should submit their application at least 6 weeks before the trip. You are expected to make upfront payment for trip expenses as funding is disbursed only upon completion of the trip.
