\n\t\tES1000 – Foundation Academic English\n\t<\/h2>\n

\n\t\tDescription\n\t<\/h4>\n

This is a required course for students whose Qualifying English Test<\/a> results show that they would benefit from basic English language skills support. Students in the course must pass it before they are allowed to read the next required English course, English for Academic Purposes (ES1103)<\/a>. The purpose of ES1000 is to improve the students’ English language skills in reading, writing and grammar. Topics covered include paragraph unity, coherence, sentence patterns, and academic integrity. Students will integrate diverse vocabulary, sentence structures, and grammatical elements to synthesise academic ideas, construct cohesive paragraphs, and reflect critically on their writing process.<\/p>\n

\n\t\tObjectives\n\t<\/h4>\n\t

By the end of the course, students should be able to:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \nWrite coherent paragraphs in an academic style;\n<\/li>\n
  2. Recognise the structure of paragraphs used in academic contexts;<\/li>\n
  3. Identify and use a range of vocabulary for academic contexts;<\/li>\n
  4. \nIdentify and correct a specific set of grammatical errors in written texts;\n<\/li>\n
  5. \nUse a range of sentence structures and grammatical features appropriate to writing tasks for academic contexts;\n<\/li>\n
  6. \nDesign and evaluate their independent language learning, particularly in terms of grammar and paragraph writing.\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    ES1000 is a 100% Continuous Assessment course.<\/p>\n
