To install NUS-VPN Client, just follow the following instructions.

0) Do the following pre-installation preparations:

  • Ensure that your computer meets the NUS-VPN Windows Client minimum requirement.

  • If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, please log in as administrator (or an account with administrator rights) as you need administrator rights to install NUS-VPN Client.

  • Stop all other applications that are running (including Antivirus software and Personal Firewalls)

1) Download the latest NUS-VPN Client from here and save it to your harddisk.

2) Click OK and save it to a temporary folder. (preferably c:\temp)

3) After you have finished saving the NUS-VPN client. Open the file by clicking on the open button.

4) Click on the button Unzip to unzip the application.

5) After the application had been successfully unzipped, click on the OK button and close the unzip application.

6) Start the installation by clicking on the START button on your Windows desktop and then click the RUN button. Type C:\NUS-VPN\Setup.exe in the open box and click OK.

7) After you clicked OK, NUS-VPN will automatically install itself and you'll be prompted to reboot towards the end of the installation. Select reboot and click on the Finish button. The system needs to be rebooted to complete the installation

8) If you are not using a Realtek RTL8139(A/B/C/D/8130)/810X Family of NIC, you may proceed to the next step. If you have a Realtek RTL8139(A/B/C/D/8130)/810X Family of NIC running on Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you have to install the updated drivers for RTL8139. Download the updated drivers for RTL8139 and run it by double-clicking on the downloaded file. You will be prompted for a location to install the drivers, just click on ok and install the drivers to the default location.

To update the drivers, click on Start-> Control Panel and select System Properties. Select the Hardware tab in System properties as shown below and click on Device Manager.

In Device Manager, select Network adapters and double-click on Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet NIC as shown below.

The Window for Realtek RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet NIC Properties will open up. Select the Driver tab from the top and click on Update Drivers as shown below

When Hardware Update Wizard opens, select Install from a list or specific location and click on Next.

As the updated driver has yet to be certified by WHQL, auto selection of the best drivers will not work. The driver will have to be manually loaded in by selecting. Don't search, I will choose the driver to install. Click Next to begin selecting the driver.

When you are asked to Select Network Adapter, click on Have Disk to manually pick the driver to be installed. Do not pick any of the existing driver shown in the boxes.

When you are asked for the manufacturer's installation disk, click on browse and select the location where you had unzipped the driver (the default path is C:\NUS-VPN) and select the file Netrts5.INF. Click Open to continue selection.

You will be prompted for confirmation of the driver location. Just click on Ok and Next to proceed to install the updated driver. Once you have successfully installed the driver, reboot the PC for the new driver and NUS-VPN to work.

9) Once the system has rebooted, you are ready to connect up via NUS-VPN. However, you must be connected to the Internet before you establish the NUS-VPN connection. After your Internet connection is established. Just click on the Start button on the Desktop, click on Programs, move your mouse over NUS-VPN and click on NUS-VPN Client. (The only pad-lock icon in the NUS-VPN folder)

10) After you click on NUS-VPN client, select your connection entry and click on connect. There are two connection entries; outside-nus if you are connecting from home or overseas or anywhere outside the vicinity of NUS and inside-nus if you are connecting from within NUS campus.

!IMPORTANT! Your NUS-VPN connection will not work properly if the connection entry is not correctly selected. Please make sure that the right one is selected.

11) The NUS-VPN Client will connect to the NUS-VPN Server and ask for your NUS Username and Password. Please key in your NT login ID, type in your password and click OK.

It is NOT necessary to add the domain prefix nusstf\ or nusstu\ in front of your login ID. However, if you do put the domain prefix, please make sure that its a backslash ( \ ) and not forwardslash ( / ).

12) If you input the correct Username and Password, you will see a "Welcome to NUS-VPN" box indicating that you had successfully connected via NUS-VPN. Click on Continue and proceed to use the NUS Intranet services

13a) If you are using Windows 95/98/ME and have not logged in to the machine during Windows startup (by either pressing ESC or clicking Cancel when you see the login window below), you will be prompted to login again (with the same login window below) upon successful connection to NUS-VPN. You are advised to login so that you will not be prompted for further authentication when you access shared resources in NUS Network.

13b) If you are using Windows 2000/XP and your computer has not joined the domain, then you will be asked to authenticate every time you attempt to connect to shared resources in NUS Network. (as shown in the window below). For the User name, put nusstf\ or nusstu\ before your NT login ID as shown in the window below. Your password will be your NT login password.

14) If you wish to access a shared resource (shared folder, computer, etc), just click on RUN and put double back slash \\ before the name of your shared resource. (as shown below). Please ensure that you have installed Client for Microsoft Networks and enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP before you do this.
