About Health Service
The University Health Centre (UHC) had its origins as a small medical facility for
students in the then University of Malaya in 1952. It was located in bungalow buildings
at No. 56 & 57 College Green, opposite the current Bukit Timah Campus (BTC). The
student population was under 900, and the facility started off with 1 physician and 1
nurse in attendance.
In 1978 the clinic moved to Yusof Ishak House (YIH), Kent Ridge Campus. By then, the
student population had increased to 6600, and staff were also treated at the clinic.
In 2003, UHC took an expanded role in providing health, staff wellness and counselling
services to the NUS community in 3 separate divisions. X-ray and
specialist services were added to the clinic in 2004. The number of
full time physicians increased to 6 in 2005. With the reopening of
BTC, a satellite clinic commenced operations in September 2006.
In 2007, a new annex housing specialist clinics was added at YIH. The specialist clinics
set up included counselling, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, physiotherapy,
psychiatry, sports medicine and optometry.
In 2009, UHC moved to its current location at University Health Centre, with its 3
divisions of Health Service, Wellness, Counselling and Psychological Services under one
roof. The current premises offer the advantage of more space and improved ambience as
well as streamlined workflow.
UHC is committed to the care of the health needs of the entire NUS
community of over 31,000 students and 8000 staff today. We are
equipped with modern facilities including 7 general consultation
rooms, 3 specialist consultation suites, a treatment room for minor
surgery, a physiotherapy room, a pharmacy, x-ray and laboratory
services.
In 2012, A rehab gym will be in operation
to cater to students and staff. The satellite clinic at BTC will
cease operation with effect from 31st July 2012 due to exigencies of
service.
We look forward to serving you.
