Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever and its fatal form, Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, is present in South East Asia, the Pacific, Africa and the Caribbean. Recently, there has been a surge in cases in Singapore, with 4 dengue related deaths in 2007 alone.

It is transmitted by bites from the aedes aegypti mosquito. The incubation period is 4-7 days. Symptoms include high fever, headache, backache, muscle and joint pains. A generalized rash may be seen 3 to 5 days after the onset of fever.

There is no specific therapy or vaccine against dengue. Treatment is supportive. The mainstay of management is to take precaution against mosquito bites and awareness of the disease. Infected persons are monitored for a fall in blood platelet counts.
