Second Master Plan ('80s to '90s)

– Review by Edward Larrabee Barnes

A second master plan was commissioned in the 1990s to give a sense of place to identify the university. The review had also taken into consideration the projected increase of student population over the next decade, the development of some teaching facilities and new institutes.

Essentially, Barnes Review focused on “points of arrival” and some landmarks”

The master plan review attempted to address 5 important questions:

  • How do you know that you have arrived at the University?
  • How do you get from one place to another?
  • How do you know where you are as you move about?
  • What is the potential for the preservation of open space?
  • What is the extent of academic expansion required and how can this be accommodated in the review of the campus master plan?
