Scientific Achievements

  • An internationally renowned clinician-scientist accomplished in the development and testing of innovative treatments for mood disorders, including medications, medical combinations, somatic treatments and psychotherapy, and disease management protocols for depression and bipolar disorder
  • Directed over three decades clinical investigations of biological and psychosocial issues in mood disorders in adults, children and adolescents, and promoted the application of clinical research findings to practice, to improve diagnoses and treatments
  • Authored some 600 papers in high-impact journals such as New England Journal of Medicine and American Journal of Psychiatry as well as 100 book chapters and books, and serves on the editorial boards of over a dozen psychiatry journals

Academic And Service Achievements

  • Highly and positively impacted Singapore's healthcare landscape through leadership roles at NUS medical schools and national healthcare entities, fostering opportunities for cross-organisational collaborations, kickstarting schemes enabling research and support as well as establishing programmes for talent development
  • Helped elevate Singapore's clinical research capabilities as Singapore Clinical Research Institute's Chief Executive Officer by developing core capabilities, infrastructure and scientific leadership for clinical research in Singapore
  • Designed, founded and served as Executive Director of the Academic Medicine Research Institute, a collaboration between Duke-NUS and Singapore Health Services (SingHealth), created to advance the research careers of clinician scientists by offering programmes, pilot grants and seminars
  • Led the growth of education, training and career development programmes at Duke-NUS as its Vice Dean of Clinical Sciences, boosting the career opportunities and expertise of students aspiring to become clinician-scientists
  • Crafted and put in place Duke-NUS' Khoo Clinical Scholars Programme introduced to engage, support and propel clinicians towards their first competitive grant application
  • Helped formulate, establish and refine the operations of Duke-NUS' Centre for Quantitative Medicine, which delivers research design, biostatistical and epidemiological expertise to collaborating clinicians and scientists
  • Devised, implemented and participated in a research seminar programme for Duke-NUS' third-year students to connect them with experts and mentors for their patient-oriented research projects
  • Aided in the construction of Duke-NUS' Voice Annotated Presentation Training Programme that forms the basis for a Duke-NUS online certificate course and which has been widely adopted by NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine for its Masters in Clinical Investigators Programme
