  • Contributed to conceiving, promoting, and launching Singapore's Biomedical Sciences Initiative as a pillar of Singapore's overall development
  • Served as NUS Vice President (Research – Life Sciences); Founding Director, NUS Office of Life Sciences; and Founding Chairman of the Board, NUS Graduate School of Integrative Sciences and Engineering to promote multidisciplinary life science research and graduate education
  • Served as Dean of the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and involved in restructuring the admission process, curriculum, infrastructure, faculty development and composition, strategic collaborations, launch of the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, and developing a close working relationship with government ministries
  • Development of an academic cancer programme at the National University Hospital (NUH) and NUS as Founding Head of the NUH Department of Haematology and Oncology, the Founding Director of the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore, and the recruitment of the Directors of the NUS Oncology Research Institute and the Cancer Science Institute, Singapore
  • Contributed to the development of Singapore's first unified academic health science system, bringing together the NUS Yong Loo School of Medicine (including the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies), the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, and the Faculty of Dentistry with the National University Hospital to form the National University Health System
  • Chairs the Board of Directors, Health Sciences Authority, Singapore; co-chairs the Board, Singapore Clinical Research Institute; serves on the Board, National Medical Research Council; serves on the Singapore Medical Council
  • Serves on the Board, the Hastings Center, and represents Singapore in the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, the Association of Academic Health Centers International, and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Tropical Medicine and Public Health (SEAMEO TROPMED) Network
  • Jointly founded the Cancer Therapeutics Research Group and served as a member of the International Education Council for Molecular Targeted Therapy for Cancer, the American Society of Clinical Oncology International Affairs Committee, and the International Oncology Foundation Advisory Board
