“I have come to academia relatively late in life. I had never thought of myself as a ‘brainiac’. Over the years, however, I have realised two things that made me decide on a career as a clinician-scholar/teacher: Firstly, one does not need to be a genius to teach well. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, I am a pretty good teacher.”

  • Mentoring doctors through the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and Masters in Internal Medicine examinations for the last decade
  • Use of multimedia in medical education
  • Computer-based pedagogy: innovated the online modified essay question examination and the neurologic localisation game
  • Started the Neurologic localisation course for physicians
  • Developed the Core Skills Module for medical undergraduates
  • Helped to set up the SimMan and MicroSim modules for skills-based emergency training
  • Overseeing the Student Internship Programme
  • Researching and publishing on pedagogic techniques and innovations

  • Use of multimedia in medical education
  • Developed digital video database of clinical vignettes for teaching purposes
  • Stressing the importance of observational skills and teaching students to “piece the puzzle” during clinical/ bedside tutorials

  • Published more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed international journals on neurology and movement disorders
  • Published 15 articles on medical education and pedagogy techniques
  • Co-wrote textbook on The Clinical Examination in PACES, a guide to the “short case” examination for undergraduate and postgraduate (PACES) examination
