- Solid-state hydrogen storage materials
- Synthesis and characterisation of ternary and multinary nitrides, imides and amides
- Heterogeneous catalysis

- Pioneered the Metal-N-H system for hydrogen storage, which has higher storage capacity and broader research scope for development and optimisation
- Holds the leadership in Metal-N-H research which has led to considerable follow-ups worldwide
- Has 11 patents, three of which were granted in United States
