The Sulu Sultanate held out against competing European interests as the last of Southeast Asia's autonomous maritime states. This study looks at the complex relationships between peoples and polities around the Sulu Sea, and in particular focuses on the changes brought about in the region as it became drawn into the rapidly expanding China trade. Sulu's segmentary state, with its mosaic of ethnic segregation and economic interdependence, proved resilient in the face of drastic change.
«a favourite of students and specialists alike...it rapidly became a classic...» Heather Sutherland, Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, 2004
«Warren has given us an indispensable addition to our knowledge of Sulu history and a model with potential application throughout maritime Southeast Asia. This valuable book deserves a wide audience.»
