General Instructions for Application to
NUS Non-Graduating Programme

 

Welcome! In this section, you will find useful information on how to go about organising your application.

If you would like more information about the various NUS Faculties/Schools and the modules offered, please visit the NUS Bulletin Online.

The table below will guide you through the online application process. It highlights handy tips and important points that you should take note of when filling up certain fields/sections in this form.

  • If you are currently enrolled at one of our exchange partner universities and have been nominated by your home university to participate in our exchange programme, please select ‘Exchange’ from the drop-down menu. Otherwise, select ‘Non-Exchange’.

  • Please select the correct level of exchange from the drop-down menu - University/ Faculty/ Department. If you are unsure, please check with your Student Exchange office or faculty/department from your home university.

  • Please ensure that your name entered corresponds to that printed on your passport/identity card. (The application of your Student’s Pass will be based on the name that you have stated in the online application form.)
  • If your name consists of non-English letters/vowels/characters (e.g |, ö, á, æ, ï) please replace them with the corresponding English alphabetical character(s) when you input it in the online form.
  • If you have used a non-English character(s), the system will prompt an error message.

  • Please provide a valid and complete address, as correspondences from NUS will be mailed to the address provided in this form (if applicable).
  • NUS will not be held responsible for unsuccessful mail deliveries due to incorrect/incomplete addresses provided.
  • The ‘Singapore postal code’ is required only if you are providing an address in Singapore. For international addresses, please leave this field blank.

  • Our Office will correspond with you primarily through e-mail for post application-related matters, such as acknowledgement of receipt of documents, request for outstanding documents and any other follow-up action deemed necessary.
  • Please ensure that you have provided a valid and accurate e-mail address and ensure that your account is maintained regularly.
  • NUS will not be held responsible for undeliverable e-mails and the consequences that follow.

  • Please check and ensure you have provided the correct dates in the form (as printed on your passport) as the application of your Student’s Pass will be based on the dates indicated here.

Upload of latest academic transcript

  • Please scan and upload your latest academic transcript in pdf format (not more than 1MB size). Following this, you are still required to send in the original transcript as part of your supporting documents to complete the application.

  • Please indicate the name of the college and University you have attended/are attending, as well as the corresponding periods (in this format: DD-MM-YYYY).
  • If the ‘second degree’ field is not applicable, please leave it blank.

3.

English Language proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS)

  • This section is compulsory for those:
    1. from a non-English medium institution (non-exchange)

    2. applying to read modules from NUS Faculty of Law and from a non-English medium institution

    3. applying to read graduate level modules from NUS School of Business (i.e. modules with prefix BMA5XXX) and are not from one of NUS' MBA Programme partner universities. (Note: GMAT score is also required in addition to TOEFL/IELTS)
  • If applicable, please note the information below before you fill up this section. You are only required to submit either your TOEFL or IELTS score. Otherwise, you may leave this section blank.
  • The minimum TOEFL scores accepted are:
    1. Paper-based (PBT): 600
    2. Computer-based (CBT): 250
    3. Internet-based (IBT): 100
  • The minimum IELTS score accepted is 6.5.
  • TOEFL/IELTS scores are only valid for 2 years from the test date. If it has been more than 2 years since you last took the test, you will need to retake it and submit the latest scores.

  • Please select at least one option.
  • You may also select more than one option (for instance, if you are coming to do coursework for one semester and research in the next semester, please select both the ‘coursework’ and ‘research’ checkboxes).
  • The ‘Internship’ option is only available to exchange students for selection. You should only select this option if internship is part of the agreement between NUS and your home university.
    Those who are applying to the Non-Exchange programme will not be able to view this option.

Research [Page 4]

  • If you have selected the ‘Research’ option above, please proceed to fill in all the fields under the ‘Research’ section (including research dates, research title, name of the host department at NUS and name of supervisor).
  • Otherwise, you may leave this section blank.

Internship [Page 4]

  • If you have selected the ‘Internship’ option above, please fill up all the fields under the ‘Internship’ section (including internship dates, internship organization, and name of the host department at NUS).
    Otherwise, you may leave this section blank.
  • Please take note of the following procedures if you are applying to do internship during your term in Singapore:
    1. You are responsible for arranging the internship with the relevant organisation on your own, well in advance of your arrival. Internships must be arranged at external organizations outside of NUS;

    2. Obtain your home university’s endorsement for the internship (letter/email);

    3. Obtain confirmation from the organisation that you are accepted for an internship, and not employment (letter/email);

    4. Obtain approval from a Faculty/School at NUS to be your host for the internship (letter/email).

Coursework [Page 5]

  • If you have selected the ‘Coursework’ option, please indicate the period of study* from the drop-down menu and select your choice of modules. (*Semester 1 commences in August and Semester 2 commences in January.)
  • Before you proceed to apply for the modules, please:
    1. confirm whether a module is offered in that semester, either by checking the NUS Bulletin Online (tip: go to the ‘modules’ tab and do a search via faculty or module code), or with the host department;

    2. read and understand the general criteria/restrictions to read certain modules. Exchange students admitted under some Faculty/Department specific programmes should also check with your faculty/department if you have to meet additional requirements;

    3. check the class and examination timetables of the modules you wish to apply for to ensure there are no clashes.
      Students will not be allowed to take any two modules that have clashes in examination/class timetables as no alternative arrangements will be made for them.
  • Please choose 2 additional modules as reserves, on top of the number of modules you are required to take at NUS. (For example, if you required to take 3 modules for a semester of study at NUS in order to fulfill the degree requirements at your home university, please indicate a selection of 5 modules in the online application).

In total, you are allowed to select up to 10 modules per semester.

  • If you are required by your home university to take a compulsory module(s) at NUS, please indicate it against the module(s) clearly on the hard copy application form (that you will be printing out later on).
  • For candidates applying to study for one semester only, please leave table 2 blank.

Confirmation Page

  • Please verify and ensure all information provided in the form is correct.
  • If you need to make any modifications, please click on the ‘back’ button in the window toolbar to move to the desired page.
  • After the necessary amendments have been made, click on ‘continue’ to proceed to the confirmation page and verify that all changes are reflected.
  • At the bottom of the page, you will be prompted to enter a password (of 8 characters). Your password is important and can be used, together with your application number, to access the online system to check the status of your application. You are advised to use an alphanumeric password for security reasons (e.g. abcd1234).
  • If all information is correct, click on ‘Print Application Form’ to print out a copy of the form (to be submitted together with the required supporting documents later on).
  • Once you are ready to submit your application, click on ‘Submit’.
  • If you are not ready to submit your application, you can save it for later changes. However, please remember to submit your application later on as saved drafts that are not properly submitted will not be processed.

Application Checklist for Non-graduating Student Programme

  • If you have submitted your online application successfully, the system will bring you to the next page which shows the application checklist and your unique application number (displayed at the top). Please take down your application number as you will need it for tracking purposes as well as to apply for accommodation.
  • Click on ‘Print Checklist’.
  • Click on ‘Logout’ to end the application process.
 
 

Things to Note for Submission of Supporting Documents

The checklist provided at the end of your online application form gives you a summary of the required hard copy supporting documents to be mailed to the NUS Registrar’s Office.

For more details on the individual items, please refer to the table below.

Please note that online applications submitted without hard copy supporting documents mailed to the Registrar’s Office will not be processed.

  1. All supporting documents which are not in English must be accompanied by an official certified English translation of the contents.
  2. Supporting documents submitted are not returnable.
  3. Please do not submit your supporting documents electronically, enclosures via e-mails will NOT be considered.

Certification letter from home university (& letter from internship organisation for exchange applicants, if applicable)

  • The letter can be from your Student Exchange Office, International Office, or Registrar’s Office.
  • For Exchange applicants,
    1. It should certify your approved exchange status and the period of exchange;
    2. If you are applying for internship, the letter should also certify the approval and recommendation from your home university, as well as the period of your internship in Singapore.

      In addition, you should also provide another letter from the internship organisation to certify that you are accepted there for an internship (and not employment)
  • For Non-Exchange applicants,
    1. It should certify that you are a current student registered with your home university;

3.

Documentary proof of financial support for study

  • Compulsary for all Non-Exchange applicants (not required for Exchange applicants).
  • If you are on sponsorship(as indicated in section E of your online application form), please submit an official letter from the sponsoring organisation with proof and details of the sponsorship.
  • For students coming on self-support, please submit documentary evidence of your financial ability to support your study at NUS. You can provide an original statement issued by a bank to indicate the availability of funds (in Singapore dollar equivalent) to cover at least the tuition fees and expected costs of living in Singapore. The document should not be dated more than 6 months from the commencement of your study at NUS.

4.

Academic Transcript

  • Compulsory for all applicants.
  • Please provide original academic transcripts of all degree programs you have completed or are currently pursuing. Each transcript should be endorsed with the university’s seal and official signatory.

5.

Agreement from NUS proposed supervisor

  • Only applicable and compulsory for those applying to do research attachment.
  • This can be in the form of a letter or email from the proposed supervisor.
  • The document should state the approval given by the proposed supervisor to host the student at his department, and the period of research that is agreed upon.

6.

Copy of TOEFL/IELTS* scoresheet

  • This is compulsory for :
    1. those choosing modules from the Faculty of Law and whose medium of university instruction is not in English, and
    2. those applying to read graduate level modules at the School of Business (i.e. modules with prefix BMA5XXX) and are not from one of our NUS MBA Programme partner universities.

  • The minimum TOEFL score ranges for NUS are:
    1. Paper-based (PBT): 600
    2. Computer-based (CBT): 250
    3. Internet-based (IBT): 100
  • The minimum IELTS score is 6.5.

Details of working experience

  • Only applicable and compulsory for those applying to read graduate level modules at the School of Business (i.e. those with prefix BMA5XXX).
  • Details furnished should include at least 2 years of managerial/ supervisory work experience.

  • Compulsory for all applicants.
 

 

Rejection of Application

Inaccurate or false information or omission of material information provided will render your application invalid, and if admitted on the basis of such information, you may be expelled from NUS. The University reserves the right to reject applications that are incomplete or inaccurate.
