NCS Medal and Prize

In 2000, the National Computer Systems Pte Ltd donated $15,000 for a gold medal and prize of $500 to be awarded for a period of 20 years beginning from the academic year 2001/2002. In view that National Computer Systems Pte. Ltd. had changed its name to NCS Pte. Ltd., in 2006 National Computer System Medal and Prize was renamed NCS Medal and Prize. 

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medal and prize will be awarded to a top student in the Bachelor of Computing (Hons) in Computer Science course.
  2. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. If there is no award made in any year, the funds available will be carried forward to provide for awards in subsequent years.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

National Semi-conductor Gold Medal and Book Prize

Donated in 1994 by the National Semiconductor Manufacturer (NSM) Pte Ltd, a book prize is awarded to the capital sum of $15,000. In 1997, NSM donated an additional $25,000 for award of another gold medal.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. (a) Subject to rule 3 below, the book prize will be awarded to the final year Electrical Engineering student who has performed best in the Microelectronics subject with the largest student enrolment.

    (b) Subject to rule 3 below, the gold medal will be awarded to the higher degree graduate in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering who has published the best research paper that has been accepted/published by an international journal.
  2. The book prize and medal will be awarded by the Board of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. If no award is made in any year, the funds available will be added to the capital sum.
  5. The book prize, valued at $350, will be in the form of book vouchers.

National University of Singapore Geographical Society Gold Medal

A gold medal, presented in 1957 by the University of Malaya Geographical Society, shall normally be awarded annually to the best student in Geography on the results of the Honours Examination for the degree of B.Soc. Sci.

  1. The award shall be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head of the Department of Geography.
  2. No award shall be made unless the Board of Undergraduate Studies is satisfied that the candidate is of sufficient merit. If no award is made in any year, the funds available shall be carried forward to the following year to provide for the award of an additional medal.

Nestle Medals and Book Prizes

Donated in 1985 by Nestle Singapore (Pte) Ltd, the medals and prizes are awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000.

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, each of the awards will be made annually by the Board of Graduate/Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
    1. A gold medal will be awarded to the best student in Paediatrics in the Final Professional M.B.,B.S. Examination.
    2. A book prize of $300 will be awarded to the best undergraduate for Paediatric Clinical Clerkship.
    3. A silver medal and book prize will be awarded to the second best student in the M.Med.(Paediatrics) Examination. In the event that the best student is not of sufficient merit to be award the M.Med.(Paediatrics) Gold Medal, he will be awarded the Silver Medal and Book Prize.
  2. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  3. The prize will be in the form of book vouchers.
  4. If no award is made in any year, the funds available will be added to the principal sum.

Nihal Kaur Sidhu Medal in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

In 2002, Professor Kuldip Singh from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology donated $20,000 to establish a gold medal award in honour of his mother, Madam Nihal Kaur Sidhu. This award will replace the Hoops Medal which will be discontinued as the funds for it have been depleted. A gold medal will be awarded from the proceeds of the capital sum of $20,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medal will be awarded to the best student in Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the degrees of M.B.B.S. The best student will be determined as follows.
    The top five students of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology clinical posting will be invited to submit an essay on a topic given by the Head of Department of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department. The medal will be awarded to the student with the best essay.
  2. The medal will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. If there is no award made in any year, the funds available will be added to the capital sum.
  5. If there is no award made in any year, the funds available will be added to the capital sum.

NOL Medal

Donated in 1955 by the Neptune Orient Lines Ltd, a gold medal is awarded annually from the proceeds of a capital sum of $30,000. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below for 2003/4 and 2004/5., the medal is awarded to the best student in Logistics and Operations Management concentration and excelled overall in the B.B.A. Honours degree program. From AY2005/06, the medal will be awarded to the most outstanding student in Operations and Supply Chain Management concentration in the B.B.A. Honours examination.
  2. The award will be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. If no award is made in any year, the funds available will be added to the capital sum.

NTUC Denticare Medal

Donated in 1996 by NTUC Denticare, a gold medal is awarded from the proceeds of a capital sum of $15,000. In 2003, it was agreed that a book prize may be awarded. The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 4 below, the medal will be awarded to the best student with distinction in Biochemistry in the First Professional Bachelor of Dental Surgery Examination.
  2. The medal is awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. In the event that no student is eligible for award of a medal, a book prize may be awarded to the student who obtains the highest mark and an 'A' grade for the subject.
  4. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  5. If no award is made in any year, the funds available will be added to the capital sum.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

NTUC Income Prizes

In 1987, the NTUC Co-operative Insurance Commonwealth Enterprise Ltd. donated a sum of $10,000 for the award of three book prizes. In 1993, NTUC Income donated an additional sum of $20,000 to institute two additional book prizes and also to increase the value of the book prizes. With this donation, the total capital sum was $30,000. In 2012, NTUC Income increased the value of the book prizes.

  1. Five book prizes will be awarded annually as follows:
    1. One book prize to the best student in Management and Organization who has also excelled in the Bachelor of Business Administration I Examination.
    2. One book prize to the best student in Operations Management who has also excelled in the Bachelor of Business Administration II Examination.
    3. One book prize to the best student in Financial Markets who has also excelled in the Bachelor of Business Administration III Examination or the Bachelor of Business Administration Honours Examination.
    4. One book prize to the best student in Communication and New Media in the Examination for the degree of Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours.
    5. One book prize to the best NUS student in the ANU-NUS Joint Honours Degree Programme in Actuarial Studies and Economics throughout the first three semesters of study at NUS.
  2. Subject to rule 3 below, the awards shall be made by the Board of Undergraduate Studies annually on the recommendation of the relevant Board of Examiners.
  3. No award shall be made unless the Board of Undergraduate Studies is of the opinion that there is a candidate of sufficient merit. The income thus available shall be added to the capital sum.
  4. The book prizes are valued at $250 each in the form of book vouchers.
  5. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically, Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.

Nursing Research Medals

In 2012, Professor Sally Chan donated a sum of S$15,000 to encourage research among nursing undergraduates, to develop their research interests and skills for use in their professional and career pursuits. The medals are awarded annually and are governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 3 below, the medals will be awarded to two top students completing NUR4104 Honours Project in Nursing.
  2. A gold medal will be awarded to the best student and a silver medal will be awarded to the second best student of the module.
  3. No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.
  4. The awards will be awarded by the Board of Undergraduate Studies on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners.
  5. In the event that there being more than one candidate of equal merit, the Board of Examiners will take into consideration the performance of candidates during the year of study in addition to their research project results.
  6. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically Statue 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding regulations.

NUSS Medal for Outstanding Achievement

Donated in 2010 by The National University of Singapore Society (NUSS), the medal is awarded annually to recognize one graduating student from each Faculty/School for outstanding all-round achievements, from the proceeds of a capital sum of $105,000. In addition, each student will receive a NUSS membership, which can be activated anytime within three years of graduation.

The award is governed by the following conditions:

  1. Subject to rule 6 below, each Faculty/School (as defined in Clauses 2 and 3, NUS Statute 3) can select a winner, from each year’s graduating cohort, who is an outstanding student having achieved academic excellence as well as made significant extra-curricular contributions.
  2. For Faculties/Schools offering only graduate programmes, the winner will be one who is graduating with a higher degree. For all other Faculties/Schools, the winner will be selected from the cohort graduating with undergraduate degrees.
  3. Eligibility Criteria:

    • First criteria – Academic excellence The undergraduate winner must have achieved at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division), or equivalent. Similarly, the higher degree winner must have attained a CAP of at least 4.0.

    • Second criteria – Significant extra-curricular contributions The winner must have a proven track record of active participation in NUS student activities and/or impactful contribution in community service/voluntary work, preferably in leadership capacities.

  4. Each Faculty/School will set up a Selection Committee, chaired by the Dean (or his nominee) with a minimum of two other academic members, as appointed by the Dean or his nominee, to select a student who meets the eligibility criteria as the award winner.
  5. The awards will be endorsed by the Board of Undergraduate Studies or Board of Graduate Studies (for winners with undergraduate or higher degrees respectively) on the recommendation of the Selection Committee of each Faculty/School.
  6. No award shall be made if there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  7. This gift shall be governed by the University Statutes and Regulations, specifically NUS Statute 7 on Gifts to the University and the corresponding Regulation.
