Graduation
To initiate the steps leading to the award of a degree, students must identify the semester in which they expect to complete all degree requirements. Filing for graduation (FFG) must be done during module enrolment of this semester, or during the period stipulated by the respective Faculties.
Degree conferment
Degrees are conferred by the Chancellor at the end of Semester 1, Semester 2, and the Special Term. However, graduate degrees may also be awarded as and when the students complete all requirements pertaining to the degrees (especially in the case of research-based graduate programmes). Students will be informed in an official letter from the Registrar regarding their conferment date. This same date will, of course, be recorded in the official academic transcript.
Commencement
Commencement is presently an annual University-wide event in early July, closely following the end of Semester 2 of each academic year. For about a fortnight, the University celebrates the graduation of each class. All students who have completed their studies during that academic year (i.e. those whose degree conferment dates fall between 1 July of the preceding calendar year and 30 June of the current calendar year, both dates inclusive) are invited. Further information, including the schedule of ceremonies, is made available, from March each year, at the Commencement website. In fact, all eligible students will be requested to register their attendance online at the website from 1 August of the preceding calendar year to the first week of June of the current calendar year.
Degree scrolls
Degree scrolls are printed following the conclusion of each semester of study for both undergraduate and graduate students who have completed all degree requirements and been conferred their degrees. Details of collection procedures are updated and announced on the website. In addition, uncollected degree scrolls will also be distributed during the Commencement ceremonies, and thereafter. As such, students may collect their degree scrolls during their respective Commencement ceremonies or the designated alternative period, either personally, or by authorizing a friend to do so. Students may also request for the degree scroll to be mailed to them. It is not normally the University’s practice to issue a duplicate or replacement degree scroll if the original one is destroyed or misplaced. Instead, the Registrar may be able to issue a letter of certification testifying to the graduate status of the student concerned. |
