How to charm your listerners: the art of making small talk

English plays an important role as the international language for communication. As more speakers use the language, international intelligibility has become more and more of an issue. How different is Singapore English from other varieties of English, especially British English? How do we ensure that we are understood by other speakers of English across the globe? In this workshop, you will:

• learn to identify certain features of Singapore English
• discuss which of these features we should be concerned about if we wish to be understood internationally

About the speaker:

Dr Low Ee Ling is an Associate Professor of English Language & Literature and the Sub-Dean for Degree Programmes at the Foundation Programmes Office at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. She is also on the national committee of the Speak Good English Movement. She has published nine books on the topic of English in Singapore and is also widely published in the area of stress, rhythm and intonation in internationally refereed journal articles and international book chapters.
