President's Vision for NUS

President's Insights

Professor SHIH Choon Fong shares his thoughts on education, research and entrepreneurship at NUS.

NUS as a waterway:
Preparing graduates to thrive in the vast ocean

A university education in Singapore has to impart an ocean mindset. Singapore is a city state. We have to make the world our hinterland, our ocean of opportunities.

At NUS, we prepare students for careers in Singapore and beyond. Think of NUS as a waterway. In our nurturing waterway, students develop skills for the vast ocean. The ocean offers boundless space for growth and abundant opportunities. We help students develop critical and independent thinking, initiative and enterprise, resilience and ability to adapt. In this way, they can discover their competitive edge and take on challenges in the ocean.

NUS’ “no walls” culture:
Nurturing agile and inquiring minds

At NUS there are “no walls” to talent. We recruit talented faculty and staff world-wide to deliver world-class education, and to expose our students to global standards and perspectives.

There are “no walls” to ideas. In an increasingly inter-connected world, ideas are not compartmentalised. We educate our students to learn and think across disciplines. For example, our life sciences curriculum integrates Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computing and Engineering.

There should be “no walls” around minds. Students should see learning as an intellectual adventure, moving from the familiar to the unfamiliar. They have to be bold enough to question assumptions and established knowledge, to move into unfamiliar territories.

NUS has “no walls” between creating and applying knowledge. Students work with professors in research projects and participate in entrepreneurial activities on campus and overseas.

NUS’ living and learning environment:
Cultivating independence and resourcefulness

We have a diverse student community, including exchange students from all over the world. With this diversity, the NUS campus is a microcosm of a global community.

We are working towards giving all undergraduates the opportunity to live on campus for at least a year. Campus living and learning trains our students to be independent and resourceful.

Our students learn to appreciate different cultures and will be ready for work in different cultural settings. Such education gives our students an edge, to move into different careers worldwide.

NUS’ global partnerships:
Enhancing educational opportunities

Just as we encourage our students to think global, NUS has to go global. We have been building win-win global partnerships with leading universities around the world.

NUS has taken leadership roles in global consortia, including Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU). APRU is a consortium of 36 leading research universities along the Pacific Rim. Members include Stanford, Caltech, Berkeley, USC in North America; Peking, Tsinghua, Fudan in China; Tokyo, Kyoto, Keio in Japan; Seoul National; National Taiwan; Australian National.

This trans-Pacific partnership brings quality educational opportunities for our students, as well as enhances the market value of their NUS degrees worldwide.
