Structured Safety Training System

Introduction

The university administration has made it mandatory for all staff working in labs to undergo safety trainings that is based on the job scope and work hazards of the respective staff. The trainings will be competency based and will be managed by OSHE with support from OHR. A set of courses has been designed to cater to specific area of safety that is relevant to staff members working in the lab. The training system will be dynamic in nature with requirements for refreshers and incorporation of new trainings when the need arises.

Key Responsibilities

Departmental Heads and Faculty Deaneries should provide time off from work for staff members to attend safety trainings conducted under the Structured Safety Training System. HOD’s and Deaneries should also ensure that all lab staff in their department or faculty are actively involved in the SSTS.

Immediate supervisors has the responsibility to ensure that staff under their charge has completed the Safety Training Needs Analysis Form accurately according to the job scope and work hazards faced by staff under their charge.

Staff will be required to do a self safety training needs analysis and have it endorsed by their respective immediate supervisors. Staff members under the system are to attend the relevant training(s) and pass the competency test that is set at the end of every training module. Staff will be required to attend refreshers at a stipulated period depending on the type of courses they are required to attend.

OSHE will serve as the training provider under the system. OSHE will also perform regular training needs assessment of staff working in NUS and introduce or improve on the courses to cater to specific needs of staff in NUS.

OHR will update the training records of staff through OSHE.
