NUS RESEARCH DIVING SAFETY MANUAL

The NUS conducts Research Diving as a tool for teaching and scientific research. It occurs primarily in the Tropical Marine Science Institute and the Department of Biological Sciences.

The National University of Singapore is committed to maintaining and continuously improving high standards of occupational health and safety. This extends to minimising the risks associated with diving activities and the prevention of dive-related injuries/illness.

The following regulations and codes apply within Singapore:
  • Singapore Workplace Safety and Health Act Mar 2006
  • Risk Assessment Regulations dated Mar 2006
  • Singapore Standard SS511:2005 Code of Practice for Diving at Work
The NUS Research Diving Safety Manual is launched by OSHE with the goal of identifying relevant safety standards and practices for research diving. Compliance is required for personnel (staff, students, attached personnel and volunteers) should they undertake diving within the auspices of NUS and within local Singapore waters. In the event that research is undertaken overseas, then the diving safety standards of the overseas institution will apply. The NUS standards will apply if there are no standards available in the overseas institution.
