Career Guides

Who are the Career Guides (CGs)?

The Career Guides (CGs) are student ambassadors of the NUS Career Centre, a bridging point between the Career Centre staff and the NUS student community. Simply put, the Guides are a family of passionate volunteers who actively promote early career guidance and planning, helping to equip students with relevant employment skills.

What do the CGs do?

Once thoroughly equipped by NUS Career Centre staff and relevant external trainers, the Guides are involved in programmes that reach out to students and help increase the visibility of the NUSCC to the NUS community.

Besides assisting the Career Centre in Recruitment Talks, Networking Events and the annual NUS Career Fair, the Guides also conduct Peer Coaching which involves resume critique sessions and mock interview workshops for students. Other endeavours by the Guides include: organising company visits to provide greater insight to an organisation’s culture, maintaining Career Guide online platform, managing career resources and information and playing student hosts for employers at various events.

Being a Career Guide is a grand opportunity to…

Be equipped with career skills that give you the edge over other students
Serve the NUS student community
Attend Career Guide-exclusive training workshops
Attend regular workshops held by NUSCC for free
Be first to meet your dream employers
Hear from the Career Guides!

"Being a Career Guide, I gained invaluable skills (teamwork, leadership skills, interview skills, and resume writing techniques, etc) under the guidance of the friendly career centre staff and fellow CGs. As a CG, I gained greater exposure to the available job opportunities and was better prepared and became more confident for the interview sessions. This had played a pivotal role in helping me land my current job. It is also a meaningful CCA where I get to learn new things and contribute by sharing information on career-related matters with other NUS students. This is definitely a CCA that I will recommend my juniors to join! "

Majored in Chemical Engineering
Currently with the DSTA as an Engineer

"Having been a career guide is definitely one of the highlights of my tertiary life. Not only did I have an enjoyable experience helping my peers plan for their careers, the experience shaped my career in a big way too. The lessons and exposure at the career centre guided me to my current role at EDB which I will never regret."

Nicholas Ang (Class of 2009)
Majored in Mechanical Engineering
Currently with the EDB as a Senior Officer

"Besides identifying my own career interest and making my own career plans, communication skills and coaching skills are the highlights of the competencies I learnt as being a Career Guides. NUS Career Centre taught me the essence of coaching is to provoke thinking about “why” and “how” rather than spoon feed the students about “what” they should exactly do in job searching process. I had abundant opportunities to critique resumes and discuss about interview skills with my peers and my friends. I enjoy the fulfillment when the students tell me that my advice helps them."

LI Ang (Class of 2012)
Faculty of Business and Faculty of Engineering

"I have been well-equipped with a myriad of career-related skills, courtesy of the NUS Career Centre staff who have always been so patient and willing to share their knowledge with us. It is this type of spirit and culture that I get to share a rich, eclectic experience with my fellow Career Guides and peers. Academic performance may be important, but it is only one out of the many determinants of career success. Career guides get to enjoy first-hand information about the campus recruitment plans of various companies – networking opportunities are abound as long as one is proactive in linking up with these employers.
