Communication

It is generally difficult to find a person without a mobile phone as it requires great effort to look for a public phone nowadays.

Often enough, you will see Singaporeans on their mobile phone chatting or texting endlessly almost anywhere.

Singapore has three main telecommunication providers, namely SingTel, Starhub and M1. With the providers, one can either subscribe to a mobile service plan or buy a pre-paid card with a local number. There are other options depending on your usage and convenience if you are not planning to be in Singapore for the long term.

Public payphones in Singapore accept credit cards or stored value phonecards. Stored value phonecards may be purchased from SingPost (post offices) and convenience stores and they come in various denominations ($5, $10 and etc). Public payphones can be found in SingPost at Yusok Ishak House.

Internet

Almost every household has an internet access. There are “plug and play” portable devices which could be convenient wherever you go.  Again SingTel, Starhub and M1 website will be able to help you to choose which is suitable for your usage.

WIFI hotspots are easily found in Singapore. You may also access the internet via Wireless@SG – which is a national programme offering WIFI at public areas – free of charge until 31 March 2013.  With this, laptop and mobile users can be connected whenever you want. To register for a Wireless@SG account, click here.

On Campus: you can access WIFI as long as you are a registered NUS student.
