ISS > Life in NUS > Pre – Departure > Adjusting Mindset

Studying in a different country and staying in a different home, you may initially feel lonely and homesick, or you may experience some form of “culture shock”. Being in a new environment, some adjustment to your routine may have to be made.

During this transition phase, it would help to have a positive attitude, a spirit of adventure and an open mind. Be flexible and open to try new things, get to know others and allow others to get to know you more. Soon enough, NUS could be your ‘second home’.

International students are strongly encouraged to attend the International Students Orientation Briefing and the International Student Welcome Fest.  These events give you the opportunity to meet senior students and make new friends. By sharing expectations, anxieties and experiences with one another, you can also prepare yourself physically and emotionally for the commencement of classes.

You are also strongly encouraged to attend the orientation programmes organised by the Halls of Residence, Faculty, Student Clubs & Societies. These programmes will help you to adjust to university life.

NUS counsellors and psychologists at the University Health Centre - Counselling and Psychological Services are also available should you wish to speak to them

Student's Attire

Students are encouraged to project a good and appropriate image by being decently attired when they are on campus. Dressing well is also a show of respect for others around you and will create a positive impression with people you meet. Improper attire such as indecently revealing shorts, singlet, clothes with vulgar words or pictures, as well as slippers meant for domestic use may give people an unfairly prejudicial impression of you.

For security reasons, do not be attired in such a way as to prevent identification such as covering of face with cloth or mask, etc.

Smoke-Free Campus

The University is a smoke-free campus. Hence, smoking is strictly prohibited on campus.

Alcohol Policy

No alcohol should be consumed or sold on University premises unless otherwise provided for such as in approved food outlets on campus or during approved conferences and cultural events. Students are advised to moderate their consumption of alcohol in social places such as pubs and clubs outside of the campus. It is best that they drink in the company of friends from campus, be wary of strangers and help to keep a look out for each other's safety and welfare.

Drugs

Drug abuse is viewed seriously under national laws. The trafficking, manufacturing, importing or exporting of drugs carries a death penalty. Unauthorised consumption also carries a heavy penalty.
