Adjusting Your Mindset
A positive attitude is very important as adjustments would have to be made. You may initially feel lonely and homesick and experience some form of "culture shock".
Be rest assured that most new international students experience these feelings, but with a positive attitude, a spirit of adventure and flexible thinking, you will soon overcome them. Maintain your perspective and check whether your expectations were too high. Keep an open mind and do not withdraw, but mix with the other students and participate in student activities and sports.
Student counsellors and psychologists at the University Health Centre - Counselling and Psychological Services are also available should you wish to speak to them – 6516-2376 / cps@nus.edu.sg
Student's Attire
Students are encouraged to project a good and appropriate image by decently attired when they are on campus. Dressing well is also a show of respect for others around you and will create a positive impression with people you meet. Improper attire such as indecently revealing shorts, singlets, clothes with vulgar words or pictures, as well as slippers meant for domestic use may give people an unfairly prejudicial impression of you.
For security reasons, do not be attired in such a way as to prevent identification such as covering of face with cloth or mask, etc.
Smoke-Free Campus
The University is a smoke-free campus. Hence, smoking is strictly
prohibited on campus.
International Students Orientation Briefing
The orientation briefing provides you with the opportunity to meet new friends, and by sharing expectations, anxieties and experiences, begin to prepare physically and emotionally for the commencement of classes.
You will also have the opportunity to meet senior students. You are strongly encouraged to attend the orientation
briefing.
You are also strongly encouraged to attend the orientation programmes organised by the Halls of Residence, Faculty, Clubs & Societies. These programmes will help you to adjust to university life.
Alcohol Policy
No alcohol should be consumed or sold on University premises unless
otherwise provided for such as in approved food outlets on campus or
during approved conferences and cultural events. Students are advised to
moderate their consumption of alcohol in social places such as pubs and
clubs outside of the campus. It is best that they drink in the company
of friends from campus, be wary of strangers and help to keep a look out
for each other's safety and welfare.
Drugs
Drug abuse is viewed seriously under national laws. The
trafficking, manufacturing, importing or exporting of drugs carries a
death penalty. Unauthorised consumption also carries a heavy
penalty.
NUS Code of Student Conduct
We wish to draw your attention to the standards of conduct which are
applicable to student organisations as well as individual students.
Hence, it is important that you read and be familiar with it.
